'Kalpana Chawla' was the first Indian-American woman in space. Shw was part of the seven-member crew of Space Shutte Columbia.

She was born in Karnal, Haryana in India. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Punjab Engineering College, she moved to the United States to complete a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from University of Texas (1984). Ms. Chawla earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from University of Colorado (1988).
