    Registered User Article Review?

can a registered user review newly submitted articles to wikipedia ?

If so, where do I find information about how to do it correctly ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Publico2020 (talkcontribs) 01:10, 29 November 2014‎ (UTC)[reply]

@Publico2020: Hi Publico2020. Yes you can but to attempt to do it correctly requires a fair bit of study. Start at Wikipedia:New pages patrol and explore the links provided as you read. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:04, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Post Captain (novel)

Reference help requested. I added a reference with a URL whose format is not accepted by Wikipedia, though the URL brings you to the page with the cover artist's name on it. Is there a way to make the link in the reference on the cover artist's name (in the info box novel) work? I tried adding http in front of the address, but that does not work to get to the page. This is a new problem for me, I did not know there were URL in unacceptable format. Thanks, --Prairieplant (talk) 01:26, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Table sorting broken?

I don't know where to report this, so I'm posting it here. It looks like table sorting is broken when the table contains rowspan elements. See List_of_nearest_stars_and_brown_dwarfs#List and try to sort on Apparent or Absolute Magnitudes. The table sorts, but it looks like it's sorting on the next column over when earlier columns in the table are merged with a rowspan designation. (e.g. it's counting the rowspan element as only a single element, rather than multiple columns.) -- 162.238.240.55 (talk) 02:38, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Table sorting is not compatible with rowspan elements. Ruslik_Zero 02:58, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruslik0: There must be more to it than that, as there is a working rowspan example at Help:Sorting#Tables with complex datarows. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:59, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The link that you pointed to is just a word salad which is impossible to understand. It explains nothing. Using rowspans in a sortable table is always a recipe for disaster—you never know what result it will produce. Ruslik_Zero 11:35, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Help:Sorting#Tables with complex datarows says: "In a sortable table, |rowspan=n and colspan=m can not be combined in the body of a table." Your example at List_of_nearest_stars_and_brown_dwarfs#List combines rowspan and colspan. I haven't tried sortable tables with rowspan in a long time and don't know which problems you may encounter if you only have rowspan and no colspan. Please don't. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social medium. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. Getting artist's paintings' images back on Wikipedia

Friends I posted a number of images of the paintings of living artist Samizu Matsuki as part of her wikipedia page beginning in 2007. Since then, they've vanished and I can't understand what is needed to restore them (nor does she). Can you help? Ron Huber (talk) 17:47, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article in question is Samizu Matsuki. I see that in the past some files may have been deleted for unknown copyright status. We cannot display the images of the paintings unless the artist has provided the proper copyright release. I also see that the article is inadequately sourced and has a promotional tone. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:27, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I will look through the article for its promotionally-toned elements - Ms Matsuki is not selling any works at all. What items are most in need of sourcing? Ron Huber (talk) 19:02, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see you have uploaded images to both the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. I don't know which of the images you have in mind but in either case it's best to upload them to Commons: so they can be used in both the English Wikipedia and other wikis. See commons:Commons:Permission and note point 3 at commons:Commons:Permission#Where OTRS confirmation is necessary. It is not enough that you state you have permission on the file page. Sorry for the inconvenience but we take copyright seriously and there are unfortunately many uploads with false claims about the copyright status. Do you still have copies of the original files? If not then you could ask for the files to be undeleted. This can be done by administrators, but not by others for copyright reasons. Confirmation of permission will still be necessary. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:31, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The entire article appears to be based on the personal reflections of the artist or her family, and not on reliable sources. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:30, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
... and the only reference in the article links to what may well be be a copyright violation. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:52, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Change the article on the shooting of Mike Brown

The article has been proven to be inaccurate (Mike Brown did NOT steal cigarettes from the convenience store before he was shot) and must be changed so that people can be aware of the truth of the circumstances surrounding his death, and so that false information and conceptions are not perpetuated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.219.154.130 (talk) 02:42, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The place to discuss the article is Talk:Shooting of Michael Brown. There are already discussions about what to say regarding the cigarillos. The latest is Talk:Shooting of Michael Brown#RFC: Alleged theft of cigars from convenience store? It certainly has not been proved that he did not steal them. His own friend who was with him in both the store and at the shooting has testified that Brown stole them. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:07, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    messed-up articles

    The last two times I contributed information, once to the Uri Milstein page and the other the Yitzchak Rabin page, the page at the end of my edit, or after it, was italicized and also moved way off the screen;

Question #1 how do I fix that.

Question #2 how do I prevent it happening in the future.

As an aside, how do you make the names of Wikipedia articles you mention show up as such (in blue type)

    Thank YouDale Stern (talk) 02:56, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've reformatted your question since you put a space at the beginning of each line. This puts a box around the text and doesn't allow the text to wrap naturally. Dismas|(talk) 02:58, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To answer your questions though, remove the space from the beginning of the line. And italics are put in by using two single quote marks ''like this'' which produces like this. And to link something, you put it in square brackets. So, [[link]] will produce link. You can see how to do more with linking at WP:WIKILINK. Dismas|(talk) 03:02, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Wrong person on google

When a certain name is typed into google, a side bar on the right of the page provided by Wikipedia offers a photo and information about the incorrect person with a similar name. Is there a way to fix this? If so who do I contact, so the correct information is displayed instead of an article of someone's page that doesn't even reach wikipedia's guidelines for notability? Thank you. LifeAquatic42 (talk) 05:17, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's not provided by Wikipedia. It's pulled from Wikipedia. Google does that and sometimes they make mistakes. But it's not any of our doing. You'll have to inform Google of the error. Dismas|(talk) 05:27, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Default to Desktop view on Safari on iOS

    Hi!

I used to be able to make the Desktop View default when viewing Wikipedia pages on my iPhone. Specifically, I use iOS 7 on an iPhone 5S. Is there any way to do this again that doesn't involve scrolling down to the bottom of the page to click on "Desktop" every time I open a new Wikipedia page? Thanks!

Also, Wikipedia's interface is simple enough that most Android or iOS devices can handle the normal desktop version. Why do we even need a mobile version?

    Thanks, Kyle 128.135.100.108 (talk) 09:37, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@128.135.100.108: I access Wikipedia through a laptop and through a smartphone. The phone's screen is so tiny that the desktop version is very difficult to use on it.
While some functionalities are missing from the mobile version, that's a problem to attack, not a reason to not have a mobile interface. I'm using the beta mobile version, and reporting bugs through Phabricator. --Thnidu (talk) 01:24, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How to include a paragraph of a page into another page?

There is a page (A) containing a paragraph (X) of text with 5 lines. I'm going to create a page (B) that will contain some information, and I want to append/include the paragraph (X) of page (A), so I don't need to type the whole text again. This feature would work by creating a global wikipedia variable associated with a paragraph, so other pages would be able to use it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faltur (talkcontribs) 13:03, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Try Help:Labeled section transclusion. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:15, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Faltur: This should be very rarely done if at all for mainspace articles. Some reasons include that it makes it inaccessible to editors who want improve it or tailor it to the specifics of another article it is included in; any vandalism to the original page will result in that vandalism showing up everywhere it appears; its copyright attribution is divorced from the source; any secondary citations using named references in the original page will fail on the transcluded pages, etc. I suggest instead you copy and paste the text, providing copyright attribution in the edit summary. What you do on Facebook isn't generally Wikipedia's concern - though if you copy an article there (as opposed to providing a link) you must comply with the terms of the Creative Commons license, which requires explicit attribution amongst other things. Note that this license covers the text. Images may be covered by other terms, and you'll need to check them individually. I suspect that it might be a lot simpler just to provide a link - and it is possible that Facebook's own terms also restrict what you can do, though you'll have to check that with them, not us. A user is deleting information on a band's page... the info is being put up by the owner of the band!

Hi, my name is Jeff Waters and I am the owner of the music group ANNIHILATOR from Canada. Annihilator (band)

There is a user named: MetalDiablo666 who has deleted/altered my official "facts/bio/info" on the page. A few minutes ago, i used the "undo" function to revert back to the recent and correct version of the page... again, what this user did was delete the official stuff and somehow leave incorrect facts... How can I prevent him from changing this page again? He is not there to add facts or "help out"; he is deleting official facts that I uploaded. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Metaliker (talkcontribs) 01:28, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Even if you do own the band, you do not own or control the article about the band, nor do you have any right to control its content. With your obvious and massive conflict of interest, you should never have edited the article at all, much less been messing around with it for so long. You should have suggested improvements to the article on the talk page of said article, offering reliable, impartial sources of information to improve the article. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:51, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A question about editing on wikipedia

Are there any rules and/or guidelines on wikipedia which state that a user must contribute to wikipedia if they hope to have their user sub pages kept? So for example, can a user cease contributing to main space articles and instead contribute solely to their own user space, without having to worry about their user subpages being deleted? Page view comparison of multiple articles

I know that you can find out the page views of a particular page on Wikipedia by first clicking on the History tab and then clicking on "Page View Statistics". Hello,

I am writing on behalf of The Shepherd Building Group. I work for the company and need to change the logo on the page as it is incorrect.

The article is here: Shepherd Building Group

The user who uploaded the logo has not been instructed to by the company. I am unable to overwrite the image. Could I be advised how to gain control of editing the page. It can include any information that is taken from reliable sources, ?

    Thanks

    KatyJobling52 (talk) 09:12, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please understand that this is not "your" page, it is Wikipedia's page about your company, please read our policy on ownership of articles. It can include any information that is taken from reliable sources, whether that is praise or criticism of the company.
You cannot "gain control of editing the page" - please read and follow our policy on conflict of interest, which explains why you should not be editing the page at all, and what to do if you want changes made. Similarly "The user who uploaded the logo" had no need to be "instructed to by the company".
If you wish the logo to be updated, please supply a URL of where the new logo can be found - or ask at files for upload - Arjayay (talk) 09:38, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I assume that the logo you would like to see on the page is this one. Getting it into the article in place of the one currently there will be easy, except for one thing. Wikipedia is careful to obey laws regarding copyright, and only uses images which it is legally entitled to use, either because they are in the public domain, or under "fair use" rules. As far as I can tell, neither of these applies to Shepherd's current logo. If the company is willing to release its copyright in the image, there are (lengthy and tedious) instructions here. Maproom (talk) 10:52, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand this is not my page and I understand I cannot fully gain control, this is not what I intend to do - I did not phrase this well. Apologies. I've changed the logo image for the company. We can use logos under a claim of fair use. I don't know why anyone would need to go through the trouble of donating their own company logo. Dismas|(talk) 11:40, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    SPI

On 21st November an editor was taken to WP:SPI for suspected sock-puppeting and there is a long backlog for dealing with these cases. This case is still low down on the list. Today the editor has opened yet another account in a different name (this is clear from comparing userpage details). Could details of this new suspected sock-puppet account be added to the current SPI form? ~ P123ct1 (talk) 10:41, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. Just add the new account's name below, and in the same format as, the other entry or entries in the "Suspected sockpuppets" section, and add a signed and dated note—below your original explanation of the report (if you were the original filer) or in the "Comments by other users" section (if you weren't)—pointing out that you've added the account to the report. I want to put my problem(my wife)hearing from unknown source in Wikipedia,so that people concerened can read and if there is any of their suggetion can be redirected to me,or through wikipedia can I get to talk to reserchers on brain? how do I go about? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Premacharir (talkcontribs) 12:16, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid that is not what Wikipedia is for. I would suggest you look elsewhere for a suitable website on which to discuss your issue. Yunshui  13:36, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You could start by reading the Wikipedia article Hallucinations. There may be some further help in the footnotes to that article which may guide you to suitable websites where you can pursue this. ~ P123ct1 (talk) 14:27, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

References and categories not displaying properly

Hi! I seem to be experiencing a technical glitch, or I did something the wrong way, but cannot figure out what... I just created a new stub article, First Council of Dvin, put the reflist under a reference header at the bottom, then added a navbox and 2 categories, but they don't display when I save the page. The references appear but without a header, the rest not at all. Could anyone fix it or tell me how to do it?? Many thanks! Susuman77 (talk) 14:29, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Missing stuff often results from something being unclosed (e.g., a tag or template). I added a slash/stroke to the ref tag preceding the References section heading. ‑‑Mandruss  14:33, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thanks a lot for your fast response, I'll be careful to check that in the future. Susuman77 (talk) 14:35, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
there is a bug report on that, as the software does not detect if the last <ref> is unclosed. --  Gadget850 talk 02:35, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There are other Wikipedia articles on this group in other languages, e.g. Arabic. (I do not mean translations of the en. version.) How do I look these up? ~ P123ct1 (talk) 14:48, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To the left of the article text, under the heading "languages", are links to the articles in other languages. Just click on the link(s) for the one(s) you want to read. Deor (talk) 14:54, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The links come through this Wikidata page. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:56, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You can get there by clicking "Edit links" or "Wikidata item" in the left pane of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:42, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That comes from an edit made earlier this afternoon. Even if it was not vandalism it was unsourced as you correctly pointed out, so I have reverted the edit. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:41, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone please review these articles for me. Thanks.Gomach (talk) 15:48, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for creating the articles. I renamed the existing Alasdair Taylor page to Alasdair Grant Taylor and created a disambiguation page. Fora Financial Wikipedia page

    Hi,

I want to make sure I have officially submitted our Fora Financial Wikipedia page for approval. I submitted our page in the sandbox but want to make sure it is being reviewed and make sure I have submitted it correctly?

    Thanks,

Fora Financial — Preceding unsigned comment added by ElissaF (talkcontribs) 16:46, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No. If you look at the box at the top of your sandbox page you'll see a green button with the text "Submit your draft for review!". You didn't press that button, so you haven't yet submitted the draft for review. You also need to read about conflict of interest. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:52, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Olympic Games, U.S. athlete sanctioned for political protest (minding his own business)

How can the Wikipedia index be improved to find my answer (or help me find the answer)

Around 1972, one or two American runners were sanctioned for standing around during the medal ceremony. They said they were minding their own business like white people minding their own business among black people. What happened/who were these famous people? Wowee Zowee public (talk) 19:07, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No need to answer. I found the answer. It was Vincent Matthews and Wayne Collett. Both were banned from the Olympics afterwards. Wowee Zowee public (talk) 19:16, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Image licence question

The section on German compounds mentions the German language can be used to produce surprisingly long compound words. I have seen the word Banküberfallvorbereitungsüberwachungsdatenspeicherungsgesetz used in a German Donald Duck comic book, and it clearly seems to illustrate a surprisingly long German compound word. If I take a photograph of the panel where Chief O'Hara is arresting Black Pete, citing this (fictional) law, am I allowed to publish it on Wikipedia? After all, I don't own the copyright on the drawings of Chief O'Hara and Black Pete on the panel. JIP | Talk 19:00, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: Hey JIP. Sorry, I don't think you can use it. Since nothing you've said indicates the image is in the public domain or bears a compatible free license, the issue is whether the intended use of this non-free copyrighted material would be permitted under fair use and I don't think it would. It's not as if this example of a surprisingly long German word is the only example one could use that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. For that reason, it would likely not meet contextual significance and its use would be replaceable by a free equivalent. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:07, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

how to add a pdf file to a page

    Hi,

I am editing the Wikipedia site for my old professor, George W. Hilton. Trains Magazine has sent me a new obituary that they ran in their November issue with their permission to post it on Wikipedia. But, while I know how to enter a link to a pdf that is on another site (eg, AEI), how do I attach the pdf file directly to George's Wikipedia site? When I click on edit the references, it does not take me to the reference section where there are presently four references. Thanks,

R Helms — Preceding unsigned comment added by RobertBHelms (talkcontribs) 20:52, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We don't provide references by uploading them. What you should do is use the {{Cite magazine}} template to provide details of the reference so that anyone who wants to verify it can find it in, say, a library and check it for themselves.--ukexpat (talk) 22:09, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Filedelinkerbot problem

Commons:File:Trevelin.jpg has recently been deleted, see Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Trevelin.jpg. This image was used in articles in several Wikipedia languages. User:Filedelinkerbot quickly removed the reference to this file from Trevelin in English Wikipieda, but it has not removed the references in corresponding articles in eight other languages: br:Trevelin, cy:Trevelin, es:Trevelin, eu:Trevelin, fr:Trevelin, it:Trevelin, pt:Trevelin and sco:Trevelin. Should I raise this in User talk:Filedelinkerbot? I could edit these pages manually, but I am wary of editing a page in a language that I don't understand. In each case, a recent edit replaced a valid image with the now-deleted image. I hope that a new edit will prompt the restoration of the original image by an editor watching the page. Verbcatcher (talk) 22:47, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Verbcatcher: As far as I'm aware, Filedelinkerbot only operates on the English and German versions of Wikipedia. To expand the bot to run on other language-versions of Wikipedia would require the bot go through whatever bot-approval process those wikis have. I suppose that is something that could be discussed with the bot's operator, but in the mean time, I've started removing the images manually (and restoring the previous one when appropriate). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:58, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Regarding Maps of India

Dear Sir I am a citizen of India & Pakistan. I happen to see your page referring India and Pakistan. We live as brothers, and there is a problem between us, I agree. But as of now the world record say that the areas marked by you in India that are claimed to be a part of Pakistan is hurting my feelings. If you want to mention the post as it is and you argue that it is correct, Please answer my question, America is a land of Red Indians, and Canadians, whereas Settlements from Europe, England and African settled there. If what our brothers do in India is problem then you have to mention USA as "Land of Red Indians occupied by Europeans and Africans". I believe I am correct. This is not a post of anguish or anger. Just a suggestion to a great organization that the way you display your ideas hurt others too.

Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by Myacc05 (talkcontribs)

@Myacc05: Our maps and text reflect what reliable sources say - namely some territory is claimed by both India and Pakistan. If you have a problem with a specific article, please bring up your concerns on that article's talk page. --NeilN talk to me 02:05, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

linking to old version of a page

I just restored some text in Vampire lifestyle that was deleted, apparently by accident, by an anonymous user in the edit of 14:03, 24 October 2014. ← That external link goes to the diff page showing the deletion. I tried to put the same link in the change summary for the history page, but at least in the preview it showed as wikicode, not interpreted:

    [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Vampire_lifestyle&diff=630933838&oldid=629660753 14:03, 24 October 2014]

    instead of

    14:03, 24 October 2014

Is there a way to do this, as a wikilink or otherwise? Please ping me if you answer. --Thnidu (talk) 01:39, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a ghost town to a county template

Hi there. I've tried to add a section about ghost towns to Template:Ocean County, New Jersey, but it was quickly reverted. I added a comment about this on the template's talk page here, but I doubt this will be noticed by anyone. Ghost towns are common on county templates across the US. Thanks! Citation

How can I make one source be sited more than once as the same number. For example if I want to use the first source in the first paragraph of my article and then that same source in paragraph 30, when many sources have been cited in between.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Erilev (talkcontribs) 05:01, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Use the "ref name" syntax. In the first paragraph, type <ref name="example">http://www.example.com</ref> and then later type <ref name="example"/>. JIP | Talk 05:19, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
