Rensselaer School
Rensselaer is a small town in North Western Indiana, and is home to 6,096 residents. This rural town is halfway between Indianapolis and Chicago. The local college was once a place where the Chicago Bears had their training camps, but no longer have them there today. Rensselaer is one for the books; they have schools, farmlands, and sports. Rensselaer takes pride in their sports, and have numerous ones to offer.
Sports
Rensselaer (2) has many things to offer at their school, besides the schooling. Rensselaer offers nine sporting activities at the high school; Football, Baseball, Boys/Girls Basketball, Boys/Girls Soccer, Boys/Girls Tennis, Softball, Volleyball, Boys/Girls Swimming, Wrestling, Boys/Girls Cross Country and Boys/Girls Track. This school has plenty of sports options open when it comes to playing in high school. As this school progresses, it has gone higher in division rankings. The baseball program started out 2A, then in 2006-2007 they were bumped up to 3A. The reason why a school goes up in division is due to how many male, or female students attend the school. The thing is this does not happen with every sport, at Rensselaer the football team is 2A, along with the Tennis, Swimming, Wrestling, Cross Country, and Track. Soccer, Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, and Basketball are all 3A sports here. Rensselaer does not have numerous state championships, but Rensselaer is known for their sportsmanship. Rensselaer excels in all of these events, especially the football and track programs.
Football
Rensselaer Central is known for many things, but mostly football. Rensselaer takes pride in their outstanding football program.
On November 28, 2014, the Football Bombers won the ISHAA Class 2A State Football Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN, by defeating Evansville Mater Dei 45-21. Mater Dei, top-ranked by AP, completed its season 14-1. Rensselaer set a record of 67 rushing attempts, while amassing a record 383 rushing yards in the title game. The Bombers set yet another record by rushing for 22 of their 24 first downs, compared to seven for the Wildcats. Rensselaer also held a time-of-possession advantage of 32 ½ minutes to 15 ½.
At the conclusion of the championship game, the IHSAA Executive Committee named Rylan Arihood of Rensselaer Central High School as the winner of the Class 2A Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award.
