History

Electrification

Former Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav announced for the electrification of Barauni-Samastipur-Muzaffarpur-Hajipur line, Muzaffarpur- Gorakhpur line (via Hajipur, Raxaul and Sitamarhi) in the Rail Budget 2008.The electrification began in the year 2011 and was inpected on November 27, 2014.[1] After the successful CRS inspection, it was announced that January 2015 onwards electric locomotives will be left inside the section.

The maximum speed in the Muzaffarpur-Hajipur section is restricted to 100 km/hr, as there is single BG electrified line between Ram Dayalu Nagar and Hajipur which got electrified in December 2014[2] and the doubling work was in progress[3].

Speed limit

The Barauni-Samastipur-Muzaffarpur-Hajipur line is not the A-Class line of Indian Railways. So maximum speed in the Muzaffarpur-Hajipur section is restricted to 100 km/hr, as there is single BG electrified line between Ram Dayalu Nagar and Hajipur which got electrified in December 2014[4] and the doubling work was in progress[5]. The ECR is trying hard for track doubling and maintenance along with their electrification all over the zone.

The important trains such as the Vaishali Express, Bihar Sampark Kranti Superfast Express, Tirhut Express, Saharsa Amritsar Garib Rath Express, Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express often cross with over 110+ km/hr through the section.

Passenger movement

Muzaffarpur Junction is amongst the top hundred booking stations of Indian Railway.[6] It handles over 150 trains and about 1,00,000 passengers daily. It is the commercial hub of North Bihar also acting as a focal point for tourism to Vaishali which is just 36 km away from the main city. It is also the originating station of many Mail/Express and superfast trains.

Hajipur Junction is located in Hajipur city in Vaishali district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the headquarters of the East Central Railway Zone of the Indian Railways and is a railway station in the Sonpur division of East Central Railway.[7] Three rail lines connect it to Muzaffarpur, Chhapra, and Barauni. It is the most common station for passengers travelling from North Bihar to Patna which is on the other side of river Ganga.

Railway reorganisation

East Central Railway zone has been lifeline for the people in its expanse and played a pivotal role in rapid development of the area. East Central Railway zone is unique in the sense that both Goods loading and Passenger traffic assume great importance in view of the huge coal loading in the coal bearing of Dhanbad division of Jharkhand state and densely populated area of Bihar. The rapid growth in both the sectors has necessitated strengthening of infrastructure of Railways. This zone is the country's second highest revenue earner with Muzaffarpur being second after Patna in this zone. Several new lines are being laid to expand East Central Railway zone's periphery.

At present there is no rail link to connect North Bihar and South Bihar near Patna. In the entire east to west stretch of of about 445Kms of river Ganga in Bihar, there is a rail-cum road bridge at Varanasi and then the downstream if we go the nearest Rail link across river Ganga is available at Mokama (Rajendra Bridge), which is 318 km away from Varanasi. The Mokama rail link is already saturated and has become a major bottleneck for increasing the number of trains between North Bihar and South Bihar. This has been a great hindrance in the industrialization of North Bihar and Nepal, which have become the important trade centre for consumable goods. Construction of Rail-cum-Road Bridge will remove the bottle-neck and both parts of Bihar will be connected by more number of trains. Trade centers of North Bihar, specially Muzaffarpur (the commercial hub of North Bihar) will also be connected with the rest part of Bihar. Power houses at Barauni (Barauni Thermal Power Station) and Muzaffarpur (Kanti Thermal Power Station) who are under going expansion in North Bihar shall also be benefitted due to lessened congestion. Hence this Rail cum Road bridge shall act as a lifeline for Bihar.

The work of Ganga Rail-Road Bridge at Patna was included in 1997-98 when the proposal was only for the Rail bridge but in 2006-07 the scope was increased to Rail cum Road Bridge. It is the longest Rail cum Road bridge.

The dilapidated condition of the only road bridge connecting North and South Bihar in Patna (Mahatma Gandhi Setu), warrants for immediate arrangement of alternate road bridge. Understanding the problem, in the year 2005, in September, 2006 scope of the project was enlarged and Rail bridge was converted into Rail cum Road bridge. The bridge will be longest Rail-cum-Road Bridge in India with total length of 4556 metres. The bridge consists of 38 spans. The proposed Road of the bridge is connecting NH-31 of North Bihar to NH-80 of South Bihar.
