Katja-Angelique Glieson is an independent Australian pop recording artist. Glieson performed on the Mainstages at both LA PRIDE, OC PRIDE and CAPITAL PRIDE in 2014.[1] Glieson is also known for playing 'Elsa' in a viral YouTube video 'Princess Rap Battle' where she raps with Snow White[2], which has been featured on Perez Hilton, Cosmopolitan, Huffington Post, MTV, Pop Crunch, and hundreds of other blogs and radio stations across the globe.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Glieson is also an actress, having starred in the feature 'Blockhouse Blues and the Elmore Beast' starring Marcus Graham, as his school girl aged daughter.[15][16] In 2013, Glieson's unreleased concept music video series 'Terminium City' received numerous nominations and awards at the Phoenix Comicon Film Festival for Best Music Video, 'I, Spy' winning the 'Wild Ace Award' at the Las Vegas Film Festival,[17][18] 'Metropolis' winning 'Best Music Video' at the California International Shorts Film Festival in December 2013,[19] as well as gaining her attention in the industry including booking high profile performances at various PRIDE festivals around the United States.[20] She was #1 on the Beat 100 charts and won several GOLD music video awards for her original music video Hot Mess and cover of Ariana Grande's 'Problem'.[21]

Early life

Katja Glieson was born Katja-Angelique Glieson in Melbourne, Australia. Her father a shed builder, her mother a stay at home mother and hospital volunteer.[22] Glieson said she spent her early years listening to popular songs from Elton John and John Farnham with her mother whilst cleaning the house on a Sunday.[23] During her childhood, Glieson endured consistent bullying from her peers due to being overweight.[24] Growing up she didn't come from a rich family and her school career was fraught with bullying and other issues. Glieson's family were considered low-income, and so she did not have the resources that other new recording artists often have. At her lowest point she was 200 lbs.[25]

The tipping point for Glieson after school was realising that to fulfill those ambitions, she had to get healthy. Having those dreams in the first place, essentially, was what saved her. The only asset she had on her side was determination and hard work. Both these attributes are the very thing that is allowing her to continue with her music career, move to another country and create new opportunities for herself.[25]

Career

Glieson moved to the Hollywood area at the end of 2012 after being scouted by children's theatre company Alpha Shows and performing live pop music around Australia to audiences of hundreds of thousands of young people. After meeting with various producers and managers, she decided to break the mould of traditional music videos by creating her own 'popcult' world, writing her own songs inspired by her experiences along with a concept music video series with a storyline analogous to her life. She recruited Kyle Rowling (Spartacus, Star Wars Ep 2 & 3) as one of the directors of her Short Film/Music Video Series. The promo trailers alone are "intense and mysterious", said KC Murdoch of the Down the Road Show web series.[26] About the inspiration behind one of the songs written for the series, Glieson was quoted as saying, "I feel like I was a sheltered conservative girl next door- the funny fat friend- indeed that's what I was. I consoled everyone, made them feel good, served them and sacrificed all of my own needs and desires. The people from my past still expect this of me. Expect me to give them all of my attention and make them feel good."

She's been compared to Britney Spears by The Examiner, a comparison that humbles Glieson, the article also noting "...(Katja's) finesse as a fighter (in her music videos) is comparable to Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff character in the Oscar nominated action blockbuster, the Avengers".[27] Print magazine LA PALME interviewed Katja and asked her about many topics, including her past and being bullying, to which she stated, "Something that I realized later on when I caught up with one of my bullies was that usually when other people are saying horrible things about you it's just a reflection of themselves or that there is something going on within that is even more traumatizing than what they are doing to you. One of my bullies when I was younger would say some horrible things to me but later on I realized she had a really hard time at home, her parents were either distant or became a broken home and they were very horrible and harsh to her so she was just reflecting her inner emotions and projecting them out onto me.". This experience, the article states, formed part of her inspiration for writing a song called Shooting Star, which Katja says is about the struggle to 'accept yourself' and how to 'make the world a better place', as she is quoted: "The first lyric in it is “Hey you in the corner, don’t look down I can see the pain in your eyes”. It’s more than just accepting yourself; it’s about loving yourself and wanting to be better. Wanting to develop, learn, grow, better person, and then to make the world a better place. It’s what comes beyond self-acceptance because once you accept yourself you don’t want to be complacent, it’s time to make the world a better place and help other people accept themselves and love themselves".[28] She has been asked to be a part of and perform at many organisations' events, including as the Celebrity Ambassador of The Norristown Project[29][30], a celebrity supporter of The Beagle Freedom Project[31] and performer and advocate for LGBT issues at various PRIDE festivals around the United States.[32]
