Galore (Movie) 2013
[edit]This article is about the movie.
Galore is and Australian movie. It is based around the events of the 2003 Canberra bushfires which lead to several deaths and multiple injuries. The movie centres around four characters in particular - Billie (Ashleigh Cummings), Laura (Lily Sullivan), Danny (Toby Wallace) and Isaac (Aliki Matangi) - and their relationships leading up to the bush fires.
Plot
[edit]It's a sweltering summer before the final year of school in Canberra and Danny and Billie lay in the back of Danny's car in embrace after they've just had sex. They tell each other their favourite parts about each other and kiss.
Billie narrates over herself walking home, revealing that in a few short weeks, bushfires were going to sweep through the city, that everyone is going to lose their houses and that multiple people were going to be killed.
Skipping ahead to the night of new years eve, Billie joins her best friend Laura at a New Years party, where they meet up with Danny. Laura kisses Danny in greeting, revealing that the two are in a long term relationship, as Billie looks on awkwardly. They all join each other as they count down to New Years Day. They wake up the next day at Billie's house, where Billie is sleeping on the floor and Danny and Laura share her bed. She leaves her room and is confronted by her social worker mother, who expresses her discomfort for the two of them to be sharing a bed, out of fear she will 'cop it' from Laura's mother. She then joins her mother for a cigarette. She goes back to her bedroom and stops at the door and looks through the crack to reveal Danny fingering Laura, she then continues to watch on.
The three make their way down to the local creek where Laura and Billie sun-bake together. Billie see's Danny talking to another boy, Corey, and urges him in their direction. Corey comes over and tells Billie he'll drop by the shop she works at later (as he is interested in her, but she isn't), she dismisses his attempt at flirting and he walks off, back to Danny who grins at her. She sticks her middle finger up at him and mouths 'aresehole'. The two girls then go for a swim where Laura states that Danny has changed, when Billie asks "For better or for worse?" She doesn't answer the question, instead, changes the subject, talking about when Billie lost her virginity, telling her she is ready to lose her's to Danny. Billie tells her not to do things just because other people have done it, and they spend the rest of the afternoon at the creek.
Billie walks home alone to find that her mother has taken in an aboriginal boy the same age as her, on probation. This angers her. Her mother tells her it's only for a short while and tells her that he's staying whether she likes it or not. Billie ignores her and continues to watch her show.
