Hlynur Atlason
Hlynur Atlason (born April 19, 1974 in Reykjavik, Iceland) is an Icelandic industrial designer based in New York City.
Career
Atlason’s career as a designer first started at nine years old winning a competition for the Icelandic Ministry of Welfare. This ad campaign which was featured on buses all over Reykjavik ran for half a year.[1]
After living for some time in Copenhagen and Paris he moved to New York to pursue a degree in Industrial Design at Parsons the New School for Design completing his degree in 2001. Shortly before graduating from Parsons, IKEA produced his “TUNO” clock for their 2002 PS Collection.
In 2000 after working for two years for Boym Partners and becoming the principal designer for the G2 Studio in 2003 Atlason left to start his own namesake studio.
Since founding his studio, ATLASON in 2003, he has gone on collaborate and work with many different brands. His professional projects are produced by major international manufacturers, they include a bath collection for Canadian brand Umbra, floor mats for their more upscale Umbra Shift, a condiment holder for MOMA, lighting for Artecnica, and packing for Microsoft brands Xbox and Zune.
In addition to running his own studio, Atlason currently teaches as an adjunct lecturer at Parsons the New School for Design.[2]
His works have been published in various books and periodicals, with the most notable being The Design Encyclopedia a book published by the Museum of Modern Art and The International Design Year Book 18 edited by famed designer Karim Rashid. Several publications have also featured various works, among them Metropolis, I.D., Core77, Design Milk, Dwell, Wallpaper, Blueprint, The New York Times,Azure, and CBN weekly among others.
