The upcoming ninth series[1][2][3] of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who began filming in January 2015,[4][5] for an airdate of 2015. The series will be the ninth to air following the programme's revival in 2005, and will be the thirty-fifth season overall.

This is the second series starring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in his TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box on the outside. Jenna Coleman will return as the Doctor's companion Clara Oswald.

Casting

The ninth series will be the second starring Peter Capaldi as the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor, and the third starring Jenna Coleman as the Doctor's current companion Clara Oswald.

In Doctor Who Magazine, Michelle Gomez confirmed that she will return as Missy, the latest incarnation of the Master who served as the central villain in series 8, although it is unclear whether she will return in Series 9 or at a later time.[10]

In January 2015, it was announced that actor Paul Kaye had a guest role in the first production block.[11] It was later announced that other guest actors featuring in the first block include Arsher Ali, Morven Christie, Neil Fingleton, Colin McFarlane, and Steven Robertson.[12]

Production

Writing and development

Steven Moffat will write the opening story, and Catherine Tregenna will write an episode. Tregenna is known for her earlier involvement in Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood.[9][13] Tregenna will thus be the fifth female writer and the first female to write for Doctor Who since 2008.

Before series 8 began, Moffat promised a cliffhanger for the series 9 finale,[14][15] and teased in DWM 475, "I've figured out the cliffhanger to the penultimate episode of series 9. And it's a whopper. Ohh, I don’t think you'll see this coming!"[16]

As the series coincided with the 10th anniversary of the show's revival, the BBC asked former showrunner and head writer, Russell T. Davies to return, along with Steven Moffat who asks Davies every year.[17] He replied with a polite 'thanks but no thanks'. A BBC source says that plans for the reboot anniversary were still to be decided, despite Davies' reluctance to return.[18] He also believed that the success of the revived show meant that “It’s now impossible for it to ever be axed.”[19]

In January 2015, the Doctor Who Twitter page reported that filming had begun on episodes written by Toby Whithouse, who has previously contributed episodes "School Reunion", "Vampires of Venice", "The God Complex" and "A Town Called Mercy".[20]

Filming

Filming and principle photography for the series began on 5 January 2015 in Cardiff.[4][5] The first read through for the series took place on 18 December 2014.[21]

According to his online C.V., Being Human director Daniel O’Hara will direct two episodes for the series.[22][23] This was confirmed by the BBC on 14 January 2015.[12]

Production blocks are arranged as follows:

Block Episode Title Director Writer Producer

1 "Episode 3"
"Episode 4"[24]
