Candide Thovex (born 22 May 1982), is a French professional skier.

Biography

Candide Thovex was born in Annecy, Haute-Savoie, and grew up in the village of La Clusaz, France.

Thovex learned to ski in the Aravis region of the French Alps, he started skiing when he was 2 years old. At the age of 8, he entered the Moguls ski club of La Clusaz. He became French Moguls champion and professional skier when he was only 14 years old. After this, he was inspired by snowboarding and started looking at skiing in a different way.

In 1998, he participated at the ski half pipe and quarter pipe competition in Riksgransen, Sweden. In 1999, Candide attended the big air ski event at the X Games and placed fourth in the Big Air.[1] Few days after, Candide became better known for being the first person to clear Chad's Gap jump.[2] He was convinced by film maker Kris Ostness to go into the backcountry to film Ostness's film, Clay Pigeons. After Chad Zurinskas failed in his attempt to take the jump, Thovex asked if he could try. Then 16, Candide successfully jumped over. He came back to it the next year and landed a d-spin 720.[3]

Candide won X Games gold for big air in 2000 at the age of 17.[4] He also won gold at the X Games in 2003 for halfpipe[5] and 2007 for slopestyle.[6]

Candide Invitational

Candide is the organizer of the Candide Invitational in his hometown of La Clusaz, a competition which gathers freestyle skiing and snowboarding best talents. The event was first held in the La Balme area of La Clusaz in 2002, and was last held in 2007. There are constant rumours of a return - perhaps in 2015.[7]

He has appeared in many movies, notably the Rastafaride series. [1]
