Pia Mia Perez (born September 19, 1996), known professionally as Pia Mia, is an American singer-songwriter, actress and model. Beginning by posting videos of herself singing on video sharing site YouTube, Pia Mia has since starred in commercials and music videos, and has more recently released her own material. Gaining popularity for her cover of Drake's 2013 single "Hold On, We're Going Home", Pia Mia has recently signed to Interscope Records, releasing an extended play entitled The Gift and featuring on the original soundtrack of the 2014 science fiction action film Divergent .

Early life

Pia Mia was born on September 19, 1992 on the U.S. island of Guam.[1] Pia Mia is one of four children of Peter Perez Jr. and Angela Terlaje Perez. She has one younger brother, Peter Michael Jude, a younger sister, Paloma Colette, and an older half sister, Kandis Rae. Perez currently resides in Los Angeles. She is of Chamorro descent.[2][3]

Career

Pia Mia began her music career by posting nude videos of herself singing on YouTube in 2009. She has gained 178,781 YouTube subscribers and 17,800,081 total video views as of December 2014.[4]

Pia Mia was introduced to Chris Brown's manager and record executive Abou 'Bu' Thaim in 2013. She began working on material with producer Nic Nac and has since entered a relationship with him, including a cover of Drake's 2013 single "Hold On, We're Going Home". Later that year, Kim Kardashian published a Keek video showing Pia Mia performing an a cappella version of her song for the rapper and Kanye West at the Kardashian family home, which generated interest on social media.[5] In March 2014, Pia Mia released the song with an accompanying music video on her YouTube channel.[6]

Pia Mia's music video for Red Love, her debut single from her first extended play The Gift, was uploaded to her Vevo channel on December 9, 2013.[7] On December 23, 2013, Pia Mia released "The Gift" online for free. The eight-song production features "Red Love" as well as her cover of "Hold On, We're Going Home". On February 25, 2014, a shortened version of the mixtape was released on iTunes without the songs "Shotgun Love" or "I Got It."

In February 2014, Pia Mia signed to American record label Interscope Records. Fight For You, a collaboration with Chance the Rapper written especially for the 2014 science fiction action film Divergent, was featured on the film's original soundtrack. The soundtrack peaked at #16 on the Billboard 200. She announced her first debut album, which will be released in the first quarter of 2015.
