Shawn Kuykendall (February 21, 1982 – March 12, 2014) was an American professional footballer, who competed with D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer.

Biography

His parents are Kurt and Sherry Kuykendall. His father was inducted into the American University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 and was a 1973 All-American goalkeeper. Kurt Kuykendall played for the Washington Diplomats and the New York Cosmos in the NASL. Both parents attended American University, Washington D.C.

Other Kuykendalls have played for American University soccer. Shawn's brother, JP, played from 2004-2008. His other brother, Kris, graduated in 2003 and was co-captain of the 2002 team.

In November of 2013 the Washington Post reported that Kuykendall had been diagnosed with an advanced and incurable form of thymus cancer. Kuykendall died on March 12, 2014.

Career

• Successful high school career at Madison High School.
• Joined American University and continued his career as a midfielder. During an interview in his senior year in college Shawn said "It inspires me everyday to walk through Bender Arena and see my father's plaque."
• After completing college in February 2005, he was drafted by D.C. United in the 4th round (48th overall) of the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft. He played his first game with them on July 15, 2005.[1]
• In 2006 he was traded from D.C. United to New York Red Bulls with teammate Dema Kovalenko in exchange for a partial player allocation. He played one reserve match for New York before being released in February 2007.
