Wikipedia:Newspapers.com/Nav Newspapers.com is a newspaper database in the family of companies associated with Ancestry.com. Their database includes more than 73 million pages from 3,000-plus newspapers, mostly local United States papers with some Canadian and elsewhere. (Lists: http://www.newspapers.com/papers/ and http://www.newspapers.com/browse/). It is particularly suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 34 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States. the collection includes some major newspapers for limited periods (i.e., 50 years of the New York Times), but mostly consists of regional papers from the 1700s onward. Very few titles go beyond the late 1980s.

As part of a pilot program with Wikipedia Library, they generously offered the use of 100 accounts to their database of American Newspapers. Due to the success of the program and the large number of requests from users, they have increased the number of accounts available to 200.

Citation and Open Access

  • Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking a Newspaper.com article, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
  • Editors should not provide bare links to non-free Newspapers.com pages
  • Citations should include a link to a "Clipping" (see subsection below)
  • Make sure to include the {{Open access}} template in citations of clippings, we want our readers to know that they can access these articles.
Example
<ref> {{cite news|title=Obituary Notes: Charles Wingate |url=http://www.newspapers.com/clip/141558/the_new_york_timesnew_york_new/|newspaper=The New York Times|date=September 2, 1909|page=9|via = [[Newspapers.com]]|accessdate = July 21, 2014 }} {{Open access}}</ref>
  • "Obituary Notes: Charles Wingate". The New York Times. September 2, 1909. p. 9. Retrieved July 21, 2014 – via Newspapers.com. Open access icon

Using the Open Access "Clipping" function

Both Newspapers.com and The Wikipedia Library would prefer that articles citing Newspapers.com be linked to clippings. Clippings allow Newspapers.com subscribers to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Thus users who click on a Newspapers.com Clipping link will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .

  10. Gatoclass (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been a registered user since 2006 and an admin since 2008, in that time I have made over 60,000 edits and authored over 300 articles including about 180 DYKs. Many of my articles would easily be GA if not FA class though I have rarely submitted them to either process. I have been somewhat inactive for the last three years due to increased off-Wiki responsibilities, however, I now have the opportunity to return to a higher level of editing and am looking forward to doing so. Currently, my main areas of interest are ships, shipbuilding, and US businesses and biographies; access to newspapers.com would be invaluable to my research as old newspapers are among my most important sources. Since then I have over 25,000 edits, including about 200 article creations. I've helped promote nine featured articles, one featured list, three good articles and several DYK hooks. Access to Newspapers.com would be useful because it would allow me access to news accounts of when and why coins were created, how they were received by the public and other important (and often overlooked) aspects of their history. The newspapers help to present a viewpoint which may be overlooked when numismatic writers cover the topic later.-RHM22 (talk) 03:11, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi@Ziko:: you more than qualify for the partnership, but can you confirm that Newspapers.com will be useful for your topic area? From looking at your recent user contributions, and based on your description of activities, your are mostly working on administrative tasks. As a relatively young account, it would be preferable to have examples of your work with content expansion, Sadads (talk) 17:00, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Sadads: Here's an example of an AFD discussion that I participated in where I found sources that allowed an article to be kept. Discussion 1 --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:21, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@MrLinkinPark333: My main concern with that example, is that the sources you found, never became part of the article. We want this content to be used actively through editing articles for expansion. Can you please provide an example of that? Sadads (talk) 14:52, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Sadads: I'm not quite sure about expanding, but here are some examples of some editing I've done in Wiki. In the Anthony Napoleon article, I heavily reduced the number of sources. I also contributed edits to Bãi_Bằng that helped make the article less confusing. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:50, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@LaurentianShield: Looking at your editing history, you are not frequently expanding content. Do you have a specific research agenda that would benefit from this access? Could you please better explain it here? Sadads (talk) 13:49, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have about 40 new articles since 2012 or so, most fairly substantial. One was listed in the San Francisco Bay Area portal for a while as a "did you know" which I think exemplifies my research interest. It is about a innovative business manager named Isaac Friedlander who used new technology to make California into a major wheat producer. This is relatively unknown, and technologically related. I lean towards those "stories" that have a large ratio of practical impact compared to what people know commonly. I use a variety of resources, but historical newspapers a big one.LaurentianShield (talk) 22:24, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I should have added it. I contribute to wiki in many different fields, many times I need to have access to the archive of newspapers, which are usually closed and need a subscription (which I do not have). For example, recently I was working on the article of an Iranian MP who lived 100 years ago, and I had heard that the newspaper "Times" had reported on his activities back then, but I did not have access to its archive. Had I had access to it, I would have improved the article with more material. --Drako (talk) 23:46, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pending Hi @Ca$e: Most of the contents, other than 50 years of the New York Times, are local US papers, and there is very little coverage after the 1980s. As the description at the top of this page says, this resource is best "suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 3⁄4 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States". It doesn't seem all that relevant to the areas of interest you mention. Is there a particular research project you are contemplating, for which you would need access to older local US papers? To give you just 2 examples: Among my areas of my work are the classics of american pragmatist philosophy. Newspapers.com hosts thousands of references to these classics. Another broad area of my work are religious movements, including e.g. evangelical movements. Newspapers.com hosts hundreds of thousands of articles in this regard. 12. SPECIFICO (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) 8000 edits. I edit in areas relating to economics, finance, government policy and institutions, and the history of these topics. I will use the access predominantly to research American economic issues, policies and institutions and their history. SPECIFICO talk 17:50, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  13. Ethically Yours (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I am quite active in referencing articles and making DYKs and GAs. Also regularly try to help clear unreferenced articles backlog. Newspapers.com access would be highly beneficial. EthicallyYours! 15:50, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  14. Georgejdorner (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been creating new articles for WP since August 2008. With more than 1,300 new articles created, over 42,000 edits, and 39 DYKs, I am a daily writer for WP. Presently, I am working on articles concerning the Laotian Civil War. Source materials are scarce in this niche; few journalists have written books on the subject. Not only would access to newspapers aid my research, but it would allow me to explore how the Laotian Civil War was presented (or not) to the U.S. public and the world. Since the history of the Laotian Civil War has tended to be treated as a minor sideshow of the Second Indochina War, histories of the latter are not particularly helpful. I am retired on a limited budget, so have not subscribed previously.Georgejdorner (talk) 16:50, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  15. Skr15081997 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been actively editing for more than a year and need this resource for my work on silent films. 1 silent film GA - The Wrath of the Gods. Thanks.--Skr15081997 (talk) 12:18, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  16. Dear ODear ODear (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Articles on recent international relations, which require access to high quality sources, particularly on American BLPs. LLAP, Dear ODear ODear (is a) 17:33, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
no Not approved Hi @Dear ODear ODear:, one of the requirements for a Newspapers.com account is that you have "a minimum of 1000 edits to the encylopedia". Since you don't have that requirement, you are not eligible. In any case, as the description at the top of this page says, this resource is best "suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 3⁄4 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States". It doesn't seem relevant to the areas of interest you mention - recent international relations and American BLPs. HazelAB (talk) 18:45, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
