The term "computer potato" was first used in San Jose, California, USA in 2002. This term was coined by a 30-something female who found that she gained weight after prolonged hours spent on the computer due to work. After enrolling in an online university, she found that she was gaining even more weight, due to the added computer time. Hence, she described herself to online classmates as being a "computer potato."

The term mouse potato (a play on words based on couch potato) is most commonly used to convey the same or similar concept.
