Hoffmann and Hofmann in their origins may be German or Jewish surnames, or both. They mean (steward, one who manages the property of another) which in American English or Eastern European languages, like Yiddish, are often rendered as Hoffman, Hofman, Hofmann and also Huffman and Gofman. Hofman and Hofmans are the equivalent Dutch surnames.
