History

Manawatu Rugby Union, founded in 1886, is one of New Zealand's oldest rugby unions. It has on occasions combined with Horowhenua, under the name Manawhenua.

Manawatu's glory days were during the 1970s. Holding the Ranfurly Shield in the years 1976, 1977, 1978. Also winning the 1st Division NPC in 1980. Runner-up in the years 1976 and 1981.

However in 1988, Manawatu was relegated to 2nd Division NPC and remained there, despite in 1997-98 combining with neighbouring Hawke's Bay to form the Central Vikings highlight being beating Northland in the 1998 2nd Division final. However due to failure to meet NZRU criteria, were denied entry into the 1st Division.
