The free state of Liberland is a self-proclaimed micronation, declared in April 2015 by Vít Jedlička on the area ca. 7 square kilometers on the river Danube. On the official website of Liberland, it is claimed that this state came into existence due to a Croatia–Serbia border dispute.[1] After the Yugoslav Wars, some borderland territory, such are Islands of Vukovar and Šarengrad, have been disputed, but this area (also known as Gornja Siga) is claimed by neither Serbia nor Croatia. [2]
History
According to Jedlička due to the post-war thick atmosphere between these two countries, none of above proclaimed this land as its own, so it is considered to be Terra nullius. The state was proclaimed on April 13th, 2015. The border is defined in accordance with both Croatian and Serbian border claims, and does not interfere any other state sovereignity[3]. Jedlička claims that the official diplomatic note shall be sent to both Croatia and Serbia, and later to all other states, with the formal request for the international recognition.[4]
Citizenship
The motto of Liberland is "To Live and Let live".[5] Jedlička said that "The goal of new state founders is to create society where righteous people should prosper without states unnefficient regulations and taxes. One of the reasons of founding Liberland is raising of government and nongovernment groups influence in business and peoples lifes. The founders are inspired by countries like Monaco, Lichtenstein or Hong Kong." Jedlička accepts requests to citizenship, which will be consequently carried of. According to the official website, only communists, neonazis and extremists are not eligible for the citizenship.[6]
