K G Kannabiran was India’s well-known human rights activist and eminent lawyer of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, former National President of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), a prolific writer, and known for his tireless and fearless advocacy for human rights.
Early life
Born on November 9, 1929, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, to Kandadai Gopalaswamy Iyengar, a doctor, and Pankajam, he had his early education in Nellore. He obtained a master's degree in economics and a degree in law from Madras University. He enrolled in the Madras Bar Council and started his practice in 1953 with the help of his advocate uncle Rajappa, he practiced law in Madras (now Chennai) with moderate success and shifted to Hyderabad.[1]
Advocate and Human rights Activist
Kannabiran started his career as advocate in AP High court in early 1960s. He defended many human rights and political dissents cases, including shankar guha niyogi case, conspiracy cases and political prisoners cases. He was also a founding member of PUCL and APCLC and many human rights organizations. Kannabiran took up cases of human rights violations, political dissidents and encounter cases, including four major conspiracy cases: the Parvathipuram (Srikakulam district), Tarimela Nagi Reddy, Secunderabad and Ramnagar cases in 1975. He played a prominent role in the Shankar Guha Niyogi murder case. Pleading his case in the lower court, he ultimately succeeded in getting the murderers convicted and punished by the High Court[2]
Formation of PUCL and APCLC
The formation of the PUCL was to establish an organisation free from political ideologies, through which people connected with different political parties could be brought onto a common platform for the defence of civil liberties and human rights. K G Kannabiran was one of the National Executive members of the PUCL along with Jaya Prakash Narayan, Justice V M Tarkunde, Asghar Ali Engineer, M M Thomas, Girish Karnad, P G Mavalankar, Nani Palkhiwala, Nikhil Chakravarty, Arun Shourie, Surendra Mohan,Ram Jethmalani, Madhu Limaye etc. Kannabiran remained President of the PUCL for 15 years from 1995 to 2009.[3]

Death
He died at the age of 81 after brief illness in Hyderabad[5]
