Current Issues in Education is an open access peer-reviewed online academic journal sponsored by Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. The journal is run by ASU graduate students and publishes articles on a broad range of education topics that are timely and have relevance in the field of education both nationally and internationally. CIE has three goals with its published research: (1) promote scholarly thought in the field of education, (2) facilitate and heighten dialogues between educators, scholars, officials, and the public, and (3) further connections between research and policy.[1]

History

The journal, which is a graduate student-run publication, was established in 1998 by faculty advisers David C. Berliner (Arizona State University), Jim Middleton (Arizona State University), and Gene V. Glass (Arizona State University) in conjunction with journal editor Leslie Poynor.[2] The journal ceased operation at the close of 2006 and underwent revitalization in 2007 at request of George Hynd, dean of the then-named Mary Lou Fulton College of Education.[3] Faculty advisors Finbarr "Barry" Sloane (University of Colorado at Boulder) and Sarah Brem (Arizona State University) and newly appointed executive editors Lori Ellingford and Jeffrey Johnson were charged with the responsibility of restarting the journal. During this revamping period in 2007, the journal was still on a publishing hiatus as Ellingford and Johnson laid plans for creating a staff that would resume in January 2008 and implementing the use of Open Journal Systems (OJS) software as the new online vehicle for delivering the journal on the web. CIE published its first volume (Volume 10) since the 2-year hiatus in December 2008.[4]

CIE is currently a fully functioning online journal under the faculty advisement of Educational Policy Analysis Archives editors Gustavo Fischman (Arizona State University) and Jeanne Powers (Arizona State University), and still is run by graduate students.

Publication Frequency

Since 2011, CIE has published one annual volume with three full issues to reflect ASU's academic semesters: Spring, Summer, and Fall.

In 2010, issues of Volume 13 were published quarterly. Vol. 13 Issue 1 reflected the ASU Spring 2010 semester. Vol. 13 Issue 2 and Vol. 13 Issue 3 reflected the summer months. Vol. 13 Issue 4 reflected the ASU Fall 2010 semester.CIE has published one new volume per calendar year since its inception, with the exception of 2009. In 2009, the journal began with volume 11 and finished with volume 12. During this year, the journal, which had already been using Open Journal Systems as a repository to tend manuscripts through the peer-review process, transitioned in Fall 2009 to the use of OJS as the means of delivering published articles live on a new website. This transition marked the introduction of volume 12—the very first volume to be delivered via the new website interface made available via OJS. This transition also marked the introduction of a revolving publication schedule. Published articles were no longer consolidated into one issue that went live on a particular date that often reflected to conclusion of the academic semester. Instead, since the August 2009 transition of fully using OJS, the journal did and still continues to publish articles immediately when they are complete. These completed articles go live on the website instantly within their specified issue. After the August 2009 transition to full OJS usage, the former CIE website was no longer used as the active publishing site.

CIE is an open access journal, thus authors hold the copyright to their published articles. The journal grants permission to copy any article, provided CIE is credited and copies of the article(s) are not sold.[5] Each published article contains the citation credit and direct URL to use when attributing credit.
