826NYC

826NYC is a nonprofit organization located in Park Slope, Brooklyn that seeks to support New York City area students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing. The front of the store, similar in eccentricity to 826 Valencia’s storefront Pirate Shop, is called The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. and features capes, grappling hooks, masks, tights, rearview glasses, new issues and back issues of McSweeney’s, The Believer, and Wholphin. Behind the swinging bookcase of the BSSCo. lies the writing center where students come to get help with homework, go to workshops, or attend field trips with their schools. There are also occasionally adult writing seminars held in the writing center.

826NYC also publishes books written by its students including Trapped: The Encyclopedia of Escape, Sonny Paine, and issues 1 and 2 of The 826NYC Review.

There are 826 National chapters in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, and Ann Arbor.
