The Australian Senate is one of the two houses of the Parliament of Australia. The Senate is unique among upper houses of parliamentary systems in that it is considered a co-equal legislative branch representative of public opinion rather than a historical relic. Rather than being modelled after the House of Lords the Australian Senate was modelled after the United States Senate and was intended to give small rural states added voice in the legilsture.
