The End of the Tour is a 2015 American biographical drama film directed by James Ponsoldt and written by Donald Margulies, based on David Lipsky's 2010 book Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself. The film, which stars Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg, is scheduled for release on July 31, 2015, by A24 Films.

Cast

Production

On December 11, 2013, it was announced that Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg will star as David Foster Wallace and David Lipsky in the film The End of the Tour, which James Ponsoldt will direct from a Donald Margulies script adapted from the 2010 book Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself written by David Lipsky.[1] On January 30, 2014, it was announced that Kilburn Media is on board to finance the film, while Anonymous Content and Modern Man Films are also producing, which the Fortitude International will be selling at Efm in Berlin in February.[3] Later on February 7, 2014, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired all rights in international English-speaking territories.[4] On March 19, 2014, Ron Livingston has joined the cast of the film. He will play Lipsky's editor, Bob Levin.[2]

Filming

Shooting of the film began on February 19, 2014, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Hudsonville, Michigan, and continued for five weeks.[5][6][7] On March 19, 2014, it was announced that the filming was taking place at JW Marriott Grand Rapids and shooting was said to wrap up in coming weeks.[8] Some scenes were filmed at the Mall of America and near the Third Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis around March 21 of that year.[9]

Controversy

The David Foster Wallace Literary Estate has not endorsed the film,[10] stating that Wallace would have never agreed to any filmic portrayal.[11] According to director James Ponsoldt, a relative of Wallace has seen the film and out of privacy, responded with positive reaction.

Release

On January 23, 2015, A24 Films picked up distribution rights to the film.[12] The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2015.[13] The film is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2015, by A24 Films.[14]

Reception

The End of the Tour has received very positive reviews, with Jason Segel's performance receiving universal acclaim. The film holds a 94% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes,[15] and Metacritic rates it at 76 based on 6 reviews.[citation needed]

Indiewire's Rodrigo Perez wrote: "At first, the picture doesn’t seem like it has enough compelling reasons to justify its existence", but it "becomes an incredibly winning and engaging portrait of friendship, lasting connection and mutual understanding".[16]
