"Marvin Gaye"
Song

"Marvin Gaye" is the debut single by American recording artist, Charlie Puth. First released on February 10, 2015,[1] the song features guest vocals by Meghan Trainor. It has reached the top five in Oceania, peaking at number one in New Zealand and United Kingdom and number four in Australia, the top forty in Austria and the top one hundred in Japan.

Background and release

Puth began his music career via YouTube.[3] He first gained viral attention after recording a cover of Adele's Hot 100 number-one single, "Someone Like You" with Emily Luther, who was also a student of the Berklee College of Music.[3] Shortly afterwards, the pair appeared on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show and were subsequently signed to DeGeneres' record label, eleveneleven.[3] Puth's debut television performance was noted by Miles Beard and Ben Maddahi which led the pair to offer the former a publishing deal with the Artist Publishing Group (APG).[4] After several months of songwriting and recording producing with a variety of recording artists among them, Trey Songz, Jason Derulo and Lil Wayne, Puth was signed to Atlantic Records by Mike Caren[4] in January 2015.[5] Shortly afterwards, Puth and fellow American recording artist, Meghan Trainor announced via YouTube that they had recorded a duet together.[5] "Marvin Gaye" was released as Puth's debut single on February 10, 2015.[1] Puth revealed during an interview with Billboard that he had come up with the drumbeat for "Marvin Gaye" whilst sitting at a cafe in Hollywood.[6] He also spoke about how the collaboration with Trainor came about, commenting, "Meghan and I were at a party one night, and we were exchanging the new music, and she heard "Marvin Gaye" and asked, "Who else is singing on this? It should be a duet. Let me sing on it!" So I'm like ... OK, Meghan Trainor just asked me to sing on my song, absolutely! In one day, she knew the whole thing. We did it all in one take."[6]

"Marvin Gaye" is a reference to the iconic soul singer of the same name with "the lyrics of the tune being an effort to spark romance and get that special someone in the mood, just as many Gaye slow jams have done for millions in the past".[7] The song is also notable for being Trainor's first release without writing credits.[7] Puth's collaboration with the former later led to his appearance as one of Meghan's dates in the music video for her single, "Dear Future Husband".[7]

Music video

The song's accompanying music video (directed by Marc Klasfeld)[8] was released via YouTube on April 1, 2015.[9] It follows a dance in school where all in attendance "start making out on the floor, including the chaperones".[10] The video closes with a kiss between Puth and Trainor.[11]

Reception

James Shotwell from Under the Gun Review gave the song a positive review and compared it to the fourteen week Hot 100 chart leader, "Uptown Funk": "The hook is simple and memorable, the melody catchy, and the foundation is essentially the same sound that has served as the building blocks of pop music for the last fifty years. Just like how Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars have made a mint in recent years with a revitalization of funk ethos, Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth are now doing the same for pop, only with less risk".[2]

Chart performance

In Australia, "Marvin Gaye" became Puth's first top twenty hit when it reached number fourteen during its fifth week on the Australian. The song also reach number 1 in The Official UK top 40 and stayed there for 1 week.[12] In United States, song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart of July 4, 2015, at number 87.[13]
