"Cool for the Summer" is a song recorded by American singer Demi Lovato, as the lead single from her upcoming fifth studio album.[1] The song was released on July 1, 2015 by Hollywood, Island and Safehouse Records, and made its radio premiere on the same date via Republic Records.[2] It was written by Lovato, Max Martin, Ali Payami, Alexander Erik Kronlund, and Savan Kotecha.[3] It is Lovato's first song with a Parental Advisory label.
Background
During the production of the fifth album, Lovato commented: "I've already started recording for my new album, and I have plans to record during the tour. The sound just evolves into everything that I've been and everything that I want to become."[4][5] She further stated, "I've never been so sure of myself as an artist when it comes down to confidence, but not only personal things, but exactly what I want my sound to be and what I know I'm capable of and this album will give me the opportunity to show people what I can really do."[6] In May 2015, Billboard revealed Lovato was in the process of starting an "artist-centric" new record label, Safehouse Records, of which she will be co-owner. The label will be a partnership between her, Nick Jonas, and Lovato's manager Phil McIntyre, and will form part of a new collaborative arrangement with record label Island.[7] It has been confirmed that Lovato's upcoming fifth studio album will be released through the new venture deal. This will be Lovato's second multi-label venture of her career; she was formerly part of Jonas Records, a UMG/Hollywood/Jonas Brothers partnership, which is now defunct.[8]
On June 6, 2015, while headlining at the DigiFest NYC, she revealed to the audiences: "It's going to be a real exciting summer for my fans, I cannot wait for you guys to hear some new music."[9]
Release and artwork
Demi Lovato announced the release of "Cool for the Summer" on June 25, 2015, with the single's artwork and the release date, July 1, via Twitter.[9]
Emilee Lindner from MTV News commented on the artwork: "The art for the song shows Demi in a strappy suit and faux fur, throwing us the side eye. She gives off an all-knowing, commanding vibe, swinging around her sunglasses without a care."[10]
The song leaked one day before its official release date.[11]
Composition
The song was written and produced by Max Martin, co-written by Lovato, Ali Payami, Alexander Erik Kronlund and Savan Kotecha.[11]
Critical reception
The song received positive reviews after its release, with Yasmeen Gharnit from Nylon calling the song "a blatantly summer song" with "boisterous, cinematic instrumentals and synth beat" that distract from "some straight-out-of-your-middle-school-diary lyrics".[11] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard gave the song a rating of four and a half out of five stars, calling it Lovato's 'most self-assured statement to date'.[12] Idolator gave an average rating of 7.5 out of 10, writing "from the hook-filled production to the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, it only takes one listen to know that 'Cool For The Summer' is going to be huge."[13] Nolan Feeney from Time wrote "Lovato's sultry vocals and producer Max Martin's Midas touch melt the track's air-conditioned synths into a sweltering, rock-infused banger."[14]
