Paradeswar Temple in Dharamgarh, Kalahandi

Dharamgarh Town is the Headquarter of Dharamgarh Sub-Division in Kalahandi district of Odisha, India.

It is also referred to as Dharmagarh. It is known as the granary of Kalahandi district.

Odisha State Government recently upgraded it from Gram Panchayat to Notified Area Council (NAC).

The Dharamgarh sub-division of Kalahandi includes Golamunda, Koksara, Jaipatna, Kalampur, Junagarh and Dharamgarh blocks.

History

Dharamgarh became a sub-divisional headquarters in post-independence period when Kalahandi joined Odisha state. Dharamagrh sub-division is histrorically well known for rice production in the region. This region was known as PUEL PAHAR, which symbolises production of more straw & paddy. In post Upper Indravati irrgation project it among the leading rice producing sub-division in Odisha. Kalahandi contributed largest number of rice mill, out of which majority of the rice mills are in Dharamgarh sub-division.

Geography

The geographical cordinates of Dharamgarh Town are 19°52 North and 82° 47 East. It is located at south-west part of the district.

Politics

The political space in Dharamgarh has been mostly circumscribed by the Biju Janata Dal.

Dharamgarh NAC, which underwent its first election in April 2015, was won by the ruling BJD. Out of 14 wards, 13 was won by BJD Candidates. Ward No. 11 was won by Congress.

Dharamgarh Block Chairpersonship is with Bhartiya Janata Party.

Dharamgarh is a Vidhan Sabha constituency. Shri Pushpendra Singh Deo, a BJD loyalist, is the MLA of this constituency.

Dharamgarh falls under the Kalahandi-Nuapada Lok Sabha Constituency. BJD senior member Shri Arka Keshari Deo is the MP of this constituency.

Among other active political parties are Bhartiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Samruddha Odisha, Kalinga Sena and Samajwadi Party.

Temples and Monuments

Bhimkhoj Shiva Temple
This temple is located in Bhimkhoj Pada of Dharamgarh. It is one of the popular religious site in the region. Pilgrims throng to this temple every monday for performing the religious rituals. During the Sravan month the environment here goes serene and pious. The Bhima Kunda, believed to be the foot print of Bhima, is a unique feature around this temple. It is due to this Bhima Kunda that this place has derived its name as Bhimkhoj. Bolbom & Nagabom are popular festival associated with this temple.

Paradeswar Temple Complex
The Paradeswar Temple Complex is located on the Dharamgarh-Bagad Route. This complex comprises of three temples namely Shiva Lingam, Jagannath and Radha Krishna. It is among the few, perhaps 3, shiva temple in the world where the Shiva Lingam is made up of mercury known as Rasalingam.

Radha Krishna Temple Complex
This temple complex is located at bastipada of Dharamgarh. It comprises of temples of Lord Jagannath and Radha Krishna.

Jagannath Temple Complex
This temple complex is located at Jagannath Pada under Ward No. 3 of Dharamgarh. It comprises of temples of Lord Jagannath and Goddess Santoshi. Unique feature of this temple complex is the Asta Prahari Festival and Rathayatra Festival.

Indravati Shiv & Vaishnodevi Temple
Located near Indravati Office on the Dharamgarh-Junagarh Main Route. It is around 5 km away from Dharamgarh.

Bhandargharen Temple
Maa Bhandargharen is kuladevi of Dharamgarh. This temple of Maa Bhandargharen is located at Bastipada Main Junction. The famous Ghata Jatra is associated with this temple.

Gayatri Temple
This temple is located at bastipada near the Bus Station within the Sri Krishna Bhawan Complex.

Lord Hanuman Temple
This temple is located at bastipada near Maa Bhandargharen Temple. Tuesday is considered auspicious for visiting this temple.

Lord Rama Temple
The temple of Lord Rama is located at Char Chhak behind the Electric Office towards the Panchayat College.

Maa Durga Temple
The temple of Maa Durga is located close to Shisu Mandir Road Junction. This temple has been built by Shri Biswa Das & Family.

Tourist Points

Dokhri Chanchra Water Fall
This fall is situated about 20 km from Dharamgarh. It has one of the best scenic view with nature, forest and maountains surrounding it.

Gudahandi Historical Site
Gudahandi is situated in about 20 km from Dharamgarh in the border to Koraput district. In the Gudahandi hills are some ancient caves bearing pictographic paintings of remote antiquity.

Ampani Hills
Ampani hills present a panoramic view of nature. It is also famous for Budharaja Temple and waterfall, located about 40 km from Dharamgarh.

Chura Pahad
Locally known as Chora Dangar is a beautiful place with forest, mauntains and springe situated about 15 km from Dharamgarh.

Junagarh
This historical town in Kalahandi is just situated 15 km from Dharamgarh. Junagarh used to be capital of Kalahandi before Bhawanipatna. It has famous Lankeswari temple, Dadhimana temple and Kanak Durga temple.

Indravati Lake
Indravati lake popularly known as Indravati Dam is situated in Mukhiguda. The hydroelectricity power station at Mukhiguda is known to be one of the largest in Asia. This lake is surrpounded by forest and mountains giving a beautiful scenai view for nature lovers.
