The sixth season of the fantasy drama television series Game of Thrones was ordered by HBO in April 2014, together with the fifth season.[1] It will primarily adapt material from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, though it is also expected to contain original content not found in Martin's novels.
Production
Crew
Like the fifth season, author George R. R. Martin, who had written one episode for each of the first four seasons, will not write an episode for the sixth season as he is working to finish writing the sixth novel of the book series, The Winds of Winter.[2] The directing staff for the sixth season is Jeremy Podeswa (episodes 1 and 2), Daniel Sackheim (episodes 3 and 4), Jack Bender (episodes 5 and 6), Mark Mylod (episodes 7 and 8), and Miguel Sapochnik (episodes 9 and 10). Sackheim and Bender are first-time Game of Thrones directors, with the rest each having directed two episodes in the previous season.[3]
Filming
Filming for season six will begin in July 2015, with scenes being shot in Northern Ireland, as well as Peñíscola and Girona in Spain.[4] Another filming location will be the Castle of Zafra in Guadalajara, Spain.[5]
