Daala is the current working name of a video coding format and accompanying reference codec implementation under development by the Xiph.Org Foundation and Mozilla Corporation.[1] Daala is intended to be a high-efficiency video coding format for use cases similar to those of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC or H.265) and VP9.[2] Daala will use a lapped transform to reduce the blocking artifacts characteristic of other video codecs that use the discrete cosine transform directly.[3] In June 2013, Chris Montgomery (founder of Xiph.org) stated that the performance goal for Daala is to be a generation beyond HEVC and VP9.[4]

History

On May 30, 2013, an alpha prototype of Daala was used to stream video over the internet.[5]

On June 20, 2013, an introduction to Daala was added to the Xiph.Org Foundation website.[5][6][7]

On July 23, 2013, an introduction to frequency domain prediction in Daala was added to the Xiph.Org Foundation website.[8]

On August 12, 2013, an introduction to time/frequency resolution switching in Daala was added to the Xiph.Org Foundation website.[9]

On October 17, 2013, an introduction to Chroma from Luma in Daala was added to the Xiph.Org Foundation website.[10]

On September 17, 2014, a talk was given stating the progress of Daala at the time. Although still under heavy development, it was generally stated that it could produce better results than its peers up to about 5 bits per pixel.[11]

On January 2015, Timothy Terriberry of Mozilla talked at 2015 Linux.Conf.Au conference about his work on the Daala video codec via Xiph.Org. According to him, another year of development is needed.[12]

NetVC

On March 25, 2015, Daala was proposed to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for their Internet Video Codec (NetVC) video standard.[13][14] The IETF has previously created the audio format Opus.[14] Some of the preliminary draft requirements for NetVC is support for a bit depth of 8-bits to 12-bits per sample, support for resolutions of up to 4K resolution, support for 4:2:0, 4:2:2, and 4:4:4 chroma sampling, support for the Rec. 709 and Rec. 2020 color spaces, and consideration for parallel processing.[15] Additional features that might be added to NetVC depending on their cost are lossless video, RGB video, and auxiliary channel planes.[15]
