Knoppix Issues
It's no problem. I'm glad you're willing to take a look. I'm running Knoppix 5.01 DVD on a HP TC1100 tablet PC. I'm at work right now and I'm having similar issues, although with a static IP.
I'll explain my work problem now, and go into the home issue later if need be. I go into Network Settings. My eth0 device is there (I assume that's my network card). I enable the interface, enter my ip and netmask, default gateway, etc. I copied the settings from a working computer, so they should work. The computer shows up on the network, and the ethernet lights are on, with the green blinking occasionally.
Trouble is, whenever I try to open firefox or konqueror, nothing will load. It always times out. I seem to be able to pull the header from the official knoppix site. I appreciate any help you can provide =). Let me know if you need any further info. Alphachimp talk 18:06, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- Has /etc/resolv.conf been updated? To diagnose whether you're communicating with the nameserver, try
host google.com
at the terminal.
I suspect the problem is either with the static routes, the nameserver configuration, or the device interface could simply not be "up". Let me know if you couldn't resolve withhost
.
I am actually downloading Knoppix 5.0.1 right now (my latest version was 3.9), and I'll see if I can get VandalSniper working on that. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 18:17, 21 July 2006 (UTC)- "connection timed out. no servers could be reached." Seems like that's the problem. I'm pretty sure that I got our DNS servers entered correctly, though.
- What's the equivalent of the "broadcast ip" in windows or os x? (I've actually got both right here.) Alphachimp talk 19:00, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- Should just be x.x.x.255. Could you please paste the terminal output of the following three commands for me?
If you don't want to make this data public, I have a way for you to send it to me without either of us having to post e-mail addresses here. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 19:10, 21 July 2006 (UTC)$ cat /etc/resolv.conf; route -n; ifconfig eth0;
- Oh, you're asking what the broadcast IP is called. I don't exactly remember. I thought it was just "broadcast address". Windows usually fills that in for you, I believe. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 19:16, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- Enable email. I'll send you my results (I'd rather not post the ip here.) Alphachimp talk 19:26, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

- Haha, no worries. I actually got the internet working here (at work, no DHCP, static IP). It turns out I was requesting an unallocated (although it was on my table) ip address. I still can't get the DHCP working off my router at home. I'm going to try running VS right now. Alphachimp talk 19:50, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

- Alright, I'm home. I didn't have time to install those packages at work. Anyway, the network situation is really strange here. When I use the host google.com (or any domain for that matter), it provides me with a complete breakdown of the site information (ip, mailservers). The computer shows up on my router. -- my setups' versions of the utility show the MX records and everything too.
Okay, I'm going to have to just brainstorm and throw out some ideas for your browsing problems. Do you have an unworking proxy address set up in preferences (also check thehttp_proxy
environment variable)? Is your router rejecting port 80 requests for some crazy reason, or only forwarding UDP packets? Is it performing erroneous NAT? Isiptables
running on your Linux box with a bad ruleset (iptables -L
to check)? If you need help with any of these checks, let me know. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 02:53, 22 July 2006 (UTC)- One more thing: I've seen erratic behavior by nForce ethernet devices in Knoppix (
lsmod|grep forcedeth
). That's probably a longshot, though. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 03:00, 22 July 2006 (UTC)- I'll check those out in the morning. One of my computers has an nForce 3 device, but the problems are consistent across both. Thanks so much for your help. I'll get back to you in the morning. By the way, did you finish getting knoppix? Alpha, thanks for being so patient. I finally did what I said I'd do and try installing VS in Knoppix 5.0.1.
First, regarding network access: everything worked for me after setting up my static route (completely non-DHCP network). All I did was the following:
su
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 up
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
echo nameserver 192.168.1.1 > /etc/resolv.conf
host google.com
And I was resolving fine. So, I unfortunately will have to just refer you to my above ideas for why your network access isn't working, since it doesn't seem that the new Knoppix version has a particularly weird networking setup -- sorry.
I am now working on getting VandalSniper working. I will update soon. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 00:31, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- I just did exactly what you did. I reconfigured my router to disable DHCP. I still can't connect to websites, but it is still providing domain information (like I said before). Alphachimp talk 00:46, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- But everything works fine in Windows?
This is a really odd problem to me. You may need to get a second opinion, as you may have some crucial Windows settings that I've never heard of, and I don't use Windows all that much nowadays. See if you can download something at the terminal usingwget google.com
or whatever you prefer (to make sure it's not a problem with Konqueror/Firefox). -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 01:00, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

VandalSniper installation on Knoppix 5.0.1
I now have VandalSniper working perfectly in Knoppix 5.0.1. Here is a rundown of the steps I used. I am simply going to type out the exact series of terminal commands you can use to duplicate my actions, which proved successful. Again, I am using the regular CD version of Knoppix, not the DVD version you have, but I suspect the same procedure may work for you.
cd ~/Desktop; su
wget http://www.chrishowie.com/files/vandalsniper-39.tar.bz2 http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2006/03/21/debian/pool/main/g/gecko-sharp2/libgecko2.0-cil_0.11-2_all.deb
- Set up /etc/apt/sources.list. You need a working stable source and a working testing source. There are a number of servers you could use, but kernel.org is consistently fast for me, so you might just want to use what I did. Here are the copy-and-paste-friendly contents of my /etc/apt/sources.list:
Note: Yes, I skipped the security updates lines.deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
- apt-get update
- apt-get install libnspr4 mozilla-browser
- During the next part, I ran out of space on my RAMdisk, so to be on the safe side, run:
rm -f /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
apt-get install mono libmono1.0-cil libgtk2.0-cil libglade2.0-cil libgecko2.0-cil
(Copied directly from the the VandalSniper page.)dpkg -i libgecko2.0-cil_0.11-2_all.deb
(Also from the VandalSniper page; do let libgecko2.0-cil version 0.11-3 install first and then use this command line to downgrade it, as I'm not sure dpkg alone will fetch the needed dependencies.)tar xjf vandalsniper-39.tar.bz2
ln -s /etc /ramdisk/usr
(This corrects a missing path startup error.)cp vandalsniper-39/*dll* /usr/lib
(Makes needed libraries accessible system-wide.)
That should do it as far as making it work. Now you can just open the vandalsniper-39 directory on your desktop and click on vs.exe. If you have problems, let me know where you got hung up. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 02:29, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Back to the network problems
- I still haven't been able to establish a connection. This whole problem seems really strange to me. Windows networking works, btw. My local router (microsoft mn-500) ip is 192.168.2.1. The DHCP assigned ip for the linux box is 192.168.2.33.
- Here's something strange. When I do the wget google.com thing like you suggest, it says:
Resolving google.com... 64.233.167.99 64.233.187.99 72.14.287.99 Connecting to google.com|64.233.167.99|:80...connected. HTTP request sent, awaiting response....
- And then it hangs...no response. I get a similar response when I start going through the steps you outlined so clearly above.
- While trying to remove DHCP and screw around with my settings, I messed up my connection and had to call my ISP, Verizon Avenue to get a password reset. I asked the tech about the Linux issue and she told me that "we do not support Linux". I think that's total BS, and I'm not sure whether that means that they don't offer any help for Linux users or don't allow Linux to connect. This whole thing is just really confusing me. Alphachimp talk 05:53, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- Ugh, sorry about leading you into messing up your connection. Password? This could be relevant. Do you have to log in every time you get online? Is there a login agent that runs in the background at Windows startup? (I don't know anything about Verizon Avenue.) Regarding the Linux support, I'm pretty sure she just meant they don't offer help with Linux, which is a pretty common ISP practice. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 09:31, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- No, the connection to the isp is over dhcp. I wouldn't allow any bs password manager to run in the background. You have to register the mac addy's of the individual computers that connect, but I only have to register my router. I suspect that the issue is the DHCP between my MS router and the linux box. Alphachimp talk 16:26, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I agree, it could be that the DHCP server isn't passing all the settings over. Have you rechecked your routing setup with
cat /etc/resolv.conf
androute -n
after acquiring a DHCP lease? -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 21:13, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I just wanted to say I'm really sorry for not posting in the last day or so. I'm not allowed access to the internet at work and was kind of frustrated by the problem (and hence didn't work on it) on Sunday. My router is a discontinued MN-500 microsoft wireless (802.11b) router. It's running A DHCP connection with Verizon Avenue (registered via DHCP) and connects to my MS Windows computers (4) via DHCP. My 4 computers are running 3 copies of XP Pro and 1 copy of XP Tablet PC edition (which is the same as XP pro). They all work flawlessly (plug and play). VZ Avenue requires that I register the MAC of each computer connecting, so I registered the router. It's never been an issue since then.
I'm just incredibly confused by how I get an error whenever I click the little knoppix penguin and go to netcardconfig and select DHCP (yes). It says:
Sending DHCP broadcast from device eth0Operation failed. Failed. Hit return to exit.
As for your suggested steps above, I've followed them, but I'm going to have to put off more work until tomorrow around this time.
That's pretty much the same thing that happened on one of my other computers (another failed to load knoppix). I assume it's some issue with my router here. Microsoft obviously hates Linux...do you think they would try to block it with their router?
Anyway, thanks so, so much for trying to help me. It really means a lot to me. Perhaps you should post your tutorial along with VS as a possible work-around for Windows Users. I'm sure a lot would be interested. I have been able to connect from work (static ip), so I could probably config VS from there (of course I'm very apprehensive to do that for obvious reasons).
VS looks amazing because it seems to pick up everywhere Amidaniel has failed to update in VP (e.g. IRC feed, swear word filter, etc.). Even though I can revert a ton of vandalism with VP, I'm not getting anywhere near the efficiency I would be getting with VS.
Regards, Alphachimp talk 05:16, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- No problem at all; I certainly don't require consistent updates from you, as it's obvious you're busy, and I know how trying Linux can be. Sorry I haven't helped you break through the barrier yet. I want to help, it's just that it could be a simple problem, like a misconfigured DHCP setup, or a complex one, like bad Linux wireless drivers. The second situation could certainly be it, because wireless drivers in Linux are mostly just buggy hacks.
I know I've gotten into the bad habit of hurling vague advice at you when I get stumped, but try looking atdmesg
output for anything relevant. In addition to this and examining the network setup as listed above, you could run thewmwave
desklet to make sure it's not just an issue of your wireless connection going out (which I doubt). Sooner or later, I know your problem will get figured out. I hope at least a small tidbit of my advice might help you get there. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 17:33, 26 July 2006 (UTC) - And thanks for your suggestion of spreading the installation setups I posted. I was actually giving that a little thought, but I guess I need to recheck the steps several times first. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 17:35, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

- Yeah, I read that. I just don't get where "55 warnings" comes from. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:06, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I am not vandalizing the article. This user was Wikistalking another user and had his original account blocked because he reverted a good portion of another user's edits based off of one quote posted at Jeremy Clarkson in which it states that Jeremy Clarkson said "When you buy an American car, you have to have sex with your cousin" which I do not doubt that this British commentator has said. Ryūlóng 04:06, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
You know... maybe it's me... you are either the 4th or 5th person to turn this on me. The guy put "when you buy an American car, you must afterwards have sex with your cousin, because that's what [Americans] do." I took it off... the guy came back with a sockpuppet (its all on the Jeremy Clarkson talk page...) then I got blocked for a week for reverting the guys vandalism and the incest remark was put back.,.. its not some thing I dont agree with.. its vandalism.. ? you cant say something like that with no source?? I could put that on ANY page with no source...!! It's clear cut vandalism... the first half of the sentence is an actual quote.. but he's spiced it up with some incest.. and I've now been blocked once nearly twice by you for taking it off... and 'Ryulong' thinks im talking about something else and is sending me smug emails so i told him to get lost and he wouldnt so i told him to F.O... thats life...
I said 55 messages because everytime I do anything now I get a YELLOW messgae over and over.
So what about this incest... you are the last guy to put it on there now... how do you feel?
Ryulong, you are so desperate to have the article say that Americans have sex with their cousins why dont YOU provide the source right here and now... I've looked on GOOGLE... you got something else up your sleeve?
-- 86.29.117.118 04:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- All I know is that you have been obsessed with deleting that segment out of the article without proof that it isn't authentic, and have also been firing off personal attacks at people. Ryulong isn't the one teetering on the edge of being blocked at this moment. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:14, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
WHEN THIS USER GETS REPORTED??? ohh man... you people couldnt be more non-thorough...
"I dont doubt that zis Englishman says zis".......... PROOVE IT!!! SOURCE?!!!
You are a German guy deciding what is represented as fact on Wikipedia by your doubts?
A good fight?
OMG... --86.29.117.118 04:14, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Who's German? -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:18, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, because he said "danke". Wow. You amaze me, 86.29.117.118. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:19, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I'll bet milk amazes you you thick asshole... now block this IP quick you dumb mother fucker!! cos we gonna play some games!! This is one of the weirdest experiences I have EVER had. There is some blatant INCESTUOUS vandalstic remarks and they have been put their by a guy who I proved has 2 sock puppets at least and how he left the remark with one and then reverted it with the other... and nothing..? the worlds dumbest detectives basically... "ze good fight"... I'll tell you what. I'll bet that it's the other way around.. I'll bet that if you claim that someone said something, YOU have to back it up, not that the whole universe has to prove that they didn't say something... how does one prove that another person DIDN't say something anyway?? The truth,,.. you guys are german teens ja? I have amillion IPs so do what you want you incest boys! --86.29.117.118 04:22, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Like I said: "wow". -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Wow... You want to be blocked, again, don't you? Just because I said one word in German, and because I'm the one who reverted your blanking of one user's contributions, makes us the bad guys? The quote, whether truthful or not, is in the right section, and I frankly have more faith in the other editor than you, right about now. You will be blocked for personal attacks now, YourCousin. Ryūlóng 04:25, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- See how I predicted that? -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:26, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I couldnt give a crap what you dumb asshole kids think. If the guy said it you would be able to prove it. It is vandalism and you guys are abusing the encyclopedia. This is why YOU Ryulong DELETED my discussion about it. Because you don't want anyone to know the truth. You are a WIKI bully and all around thicky!! I WILL see this page corrected.. trouble making pervert!! (ooh he probably said it)... sheer genius!! --86.29.116.217 04:32, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Do you really want to get your entire range blocked? I've asked the question on the talk page, and I will not revert your edits, yet. Your disscussion was removed because you are personally attacking those who do not agree with you. Ryūlóng
I don't have an entire range.. you do your best thicky... I WILL see the page corrected.. no keystone dumbasses are gonna change anything... you cant make up stuff like that without a source.. dont be a clown..like I said... you can fuck off.. I'm tired of you stalking me and undogin my reverts and trying to erase my discussions... its simply not on... you kids should wrao it up now... big kids stuff.. night night... --86.29.115.239 04:41, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Omicronpersei8: he's had his final warning. There are now 4 /24 range blocks for 31 hours. Ryūlóng 04:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- They're in effect now? -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:44, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
ugh.... ugh............. yeh ..... ugh... they're in effect now... ugh... I can't feel my cousin,, ugh,,, f-f-ffading.. ooh.. der Krankenhaus,,, (YourCousin)--86.29.113.57 04:48, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Are you about to become more powerful than I can possibly imagine? -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:49, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Since I know he's going to come back here, the quote is gone. It is not going to be added back tonight. Now stop making personal attacks, against myself, Kevin Breiterstein, Omicronperseii8, or Chico-whatever-the-rest-of-his-username-is. If someone says "Yes, Jeremy Clarkson did say that 'When you buy an American car, you have to have sex with your cousin because that is what [Americans] do'", then the quote will be added back. If you continue to make vandalous remarks on any of us, you may find yourself unable to edit Wikipedia, ever. Ryūlóng 04:57, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
