Inventions & Discoveries

Polythene invented in 1933, at ICI in Northwich [1] [2] [3]

Pulsation Engine a precursor to Hydraulic_ram, invented by John Whitehurst in Oulton Park.

First observation of extragalactic radio source The Andromeda nebula (M31) made at Jodrell Bank in 1950 [4] [5]



Firsts

Claim of "Birth of England" AD937 A suggested site of Battle of Brunanburh was Bromborough in AD937 between King Athelstan and a Scots-Viking-Irish coalition. There are even suggestions that is was the fairway of 11th hole at Brackenwood golf course. The outcome has been described as "Birth of England" with the continued separation of the British Isles into distinct nations [6].


Cheshire Cheese: There are conflicting accounts of Cheshire Cheese being mentioned in the Domesday, and so the first county cheese, or along with Shropshire Cheese, recorded much later in 1580. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
