In Washington, D.C., at the National Zoological Park, the adult female giant panda, Mei Xiang, 17, goes into labor and then delivers a cub, of as yet unknown sex; the father is not known yet, because another male giant panda from a center in China was also used to do the artificial insemination, in addition to her mate Tian Tian. Mei has given birth to two cubs who survived to maturity- Bao Bao in 2013, most recently, and in 2005, Tai Shan. A third stillborn cub was delivered after Bao Bao's 2013 birth, and a fourth cub died of liver problems days after its 2012 birth. It is a major event for the Zoo and for giant panda conservation; they are a national symbol of China and are still critically endangered. (Washington Post)
