The Irish Open is formally a men's and women's tennis tournament held at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin, Ireland. For the first 24 years the men's event was held at Fitzwilliam Square. The event was on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour from 1971 to 1973. Originally known as the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships, when the event became part of the WTA Tour, it was branded as Carroll's Irish Open.

Irish Championships at Dublin, before 1903

The Irish Open is the second oldest tournament in the world, first played two years after Wimbledon began. When it began in 1879 the tournament had the distinction of being the first event to feature men's and women's singles and doubles tournaments as well as a mixed doubles competition. It was considered one of the main tournaments until World War I. Until 1973 the tournament was played on grass courts. In 2010 it was a men's only event.[1]
