A derogatory word used by critics of the highrise buildings going up in San Francisco during the 60's and 70's, who were concerned the skyscrapers would block views of the surrounding hills. The term "manhattanization" has been applied to Miami and Las Vegas recently, in an economic light. Another wave of highrise buildings has started in San Francisco, but this wave has been met with very light opposition.
