History

Mediclinic International was founded in 1983 when its current chairman, Dr Edwin Hertzog, was commissioned by the then Rembrandt Group (now Remgro Group) to undertake a feasibility study on how profitable private hospitals could be. Three years later Mediclinic International, running four hospitals with 691 beds in commission and three hospitals with 688 beds under construction, listed on the JSE Limited, the South African stock exchange in 1986.

Today, the group has operations in Southern Africa, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates: Mediclinic Southern Africa operates 49 hospitals throughout South Africa and three in Namibia with more than 7,000 beds in total; Hirslanden operates 14 private acute care facilities in Switzerland with 1,365 beds; and Emirates Healthcare operates two hospitals with 336 beds and eight clinics in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.[citation needed]

Mediclinic Middle East was previously known as EHL Management Services. Mediclinic International owned 50.4% of Emirates Healthcare Holdings, with the remaining interest held by the Varkey Group (44.4%) and GE (5.2%).[citation needed]. EHL Management Services was renamed to Mediclinic Middle East when Mediclinic International acquired all remaining shares from its partners Varkey Group and General Electric in October 2012. [1]
