Paul Darren Williams (born 26 March 1971) is an English former professional footballer.
As a player he was a defender from 1989 until 2005 notably in the Premier League for both Coventry City and Southampton, as well as in the Football League for Derby County, Lincoln City and Stoke City. He finished his career with United States with Richmond Kickers and remained in the country becoming manager of Fredericksburg Gunners in 2006.
Playing career
Born in Burton upon Trent, Williams began his professional career with Derby County in 1985 where he appeared in 160 League games and scored 26 goals, initially playing in central midfield before being converted to a defender. He also appeared in 8 FA Cup games and scored three goals and 12 Football League Cup games, scoring two goals. He played briefly on loan to Lincoln City in 1989 and then was transferred to Premier League side Coventry City in 1995 where he appeared in 169 games and scored five goals in League play as well as 13 appearances in the F.A. Cup and 17 in the League Cup.
Following Coventry's relegation in 2001 Williams was transferred to Southampton where he appeared in 39 League games, two FA Cup matches, and one League Cup game. Williams was a member of the Southampton side that lost the 2003 FA Cup Final to Arsenal. Williams was an unused substitute in the game, but he did contribute on the field for Southampton earlier on in the campaign when they drew 1–1 with Millwall.[1]
Williams left Southampton at the end of the 2002–03 season and joined Tony Pulis at Stoke City.[2] After agreeing to join Stoke Williams was accused by Walsall manager Colin Lee using Walsall to get a better contract.[3] He made 20 appearances for Stoke in 2003–04 but failed to make one in 2004–05 and was released. He went to the United States and joined Richmond Kickers.
Coaching career
He spent the 2006–07 season as head coach of Fredericksburg Gunners in the USL Premier Development League, the fourth tier of football in the United States. On 14 October 2009 Williams joined Aldershot Town as Assistant Caretaker Manager, assisting his former Southampton team mate Jason Dodd.[4]
At the start of the 2010–2011 season, Williams took over as first team coach of Team Solent. On 2 June 2011 he was appointed as 1st Team Coach / Assistant Manager of Eastleigh. On 6 July 2011 he rejoined former club Southampton as Youth Development Coach,[5] but was dismissed from the role on 20 May 2014, along with Jason Dodd.[6][7] In July 2015, Williams joined Brentford as Logistics Manager [8] and subsequently became assistant to new coach Lee Carsley in September of the same year [9].
