Nino Surguladze (Georgian: ნინო სურგულაძე; born in Tbilisi, Georgia) is a Georgian mezzo-soprano.

Biography

Born in Tbilisi, Nino Surguladze studied singing with Guliko Kariauli at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire.[1] After winning a prize at the Francisco Viñas International Singing Contest in Barcelona, she earned her a scholarship at it,[2][1][3] where she studied with Leyla Gencer and Luciana Serra.[4] She made her operatic debut as Cuniza in Verdi's Oberto and Zulma in Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri in Milan in 2002,[5][6] and since appeared in many opera houses around the world, including Teatro alla Scala,the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Salzburg Festival, Arena di Verona and the Sferisterio Opera Festival. She sang twice in the season Opening of Teatro alla Scala at the age 23 and 24 under the baton of Riccardo Muti. She Sang numerous Productions in Teatro alla Scala, Solocha in Cerevicki by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Valencienne in Die Lusyige Witwe by Franz Lehár, Christmas eve concert with Riccardo Muti, Fyodor in Boris Godunov by Modest Mussorgsky under the baton of Valery Gergiev. She worked with Great conductors; Gianandrea Noseda, Nicola Luisotti, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Oren, Paolo Arrivabeni, Michel Plasson, Jesus Lopez Cobos,Gianluca Marciano, Vladimir Yurovsky, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniele Rustioni and many others, with Stage directors; Pier Luigi Pizzi, Graham Vick, Dante Feretti, Marco Belloccio, Hugo De Ana, Andrea Cigni and others.

Surguladze's repertory is formed by roles sung in Italian, French, Russian and German.

She has sung as Maddalena (Rigoletto) in performances at the Metropolitan Opera,[7] Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa,[8] Teatro Real in Madrid,[9] Liceu in Barcelona,[10] and the Sferisterio Opera Festival;[11] Meg (Falstaff) in Milan conducted by Riccardo Muti;[12] Fenena (Nabucco) at Arena di Verona;[13][14] Sinaïde (Moïse et Pharaon) under the baton of Riccardo Muti at the Salzburg Festival;[15] Olga (Eugene Onegin) at Teatro alla Scala,[16] in London,[17] Chicago,[18] and at Teatro Regio di Torino;[19] Clara (Betrothal in a monastery) at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera;[20] Federica (Luisa Miller) at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples;[21] Amneris (Aida) at Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège;[22] Carmen (Carmen) in San Diego,[23] Naples,[24] and at Teatro Comunale di Bologna;[25] Dorabella (Così fan tutte) in London;[26] Nicklausse at Teatro Regio di Torino[27] and the Voice of the mother of Antonia (Les contes d'Hoffmann) in Milan;[28] Marguerite (La damnation de Faust) in Parma;[29] Adalgisa (Norma) at the Al Bustan Festival in Beirut;[30] Stéphano (Roméo et Juliette) at Arena di Verona;[31][32][33] Siebel (Faust) at Teatro alla Scala;[34] Marie (Moïse et Pharaon) at Teatro alla Scala[35] and in Rome;[36] Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana) at Opéra d'Avignon;[37] and Mater Gloriosa (Scenes from Goethe's Faust) in Parma.[38]

Together with Placido Domingo, Ruggero Raimondi and Vittorio Grigolo, she sang in it, a TV version of Verdi's opera shot in Mantua in 2010. Her earlier experience in acting includes participation in Georgian movies Valsi PechorazeIMDb Valsi Pechoraze (1992) and Metichara.IMDb, Metichara (1988).

In 2010, she was awarded the Presidential Order of Excellence by Mikhail Saakashvili.[39][40]

Nino Surguladze is a founder of the charity foundation Desire Tree, that aims at providing assistance to children in need of medical care.[41][42]
