The Alstom Metropolis C830C together with the C751C are the third generation of communication-based train control (CBTC) rolling stock to be used in Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines. 24 trainsets of 3 cars were manufactured by Shanghai Alstom Transport Co Ltd (joint venture of Alstom and Shanghai Electric), with deliveries from end June 2014.

As of 5 October 2015, 9 sets went into revenue service.

History

The contract, worth S$134 million, was awarded to Alstom (as part of turnkey contract C830C) by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore to supply additional trains for the Circle MRT Line. Alstom won over Hyundai Rotem, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Construcciones Y Auxiliar De Ferrocarriles and CSR Zhuzhou to secure the order.

Design

The body shell is identical to the C830 with slight differences such as a larger SMRT logo up front but the interior is significantly different.The colour motif is similar to the C951s which are serving the Downtown Line in which the reserved seats are red. Unlike the C830 which have the Pink and Green seats at the end cars while the Blue is in the middle. The end cars are equipped with Indigo and Yellowish-Green seats while the middle car has Tan seats. The train is also equipped with a louder propulsion system.

They're also 4 other main design differences between the 2 trains including the inner layer of the doors finished in Bluish-Grey rather than white, A New Passenger Information System, similar to the C951s and C751Cs, also known as Dynamic Route Map Display, located above the doors, 2 stickers at each end car and a new gangway design.

To know this new train, the headlights were being in White colour similar to C951 and C751C instead of previously yellow which uses on older trains,

Driverless operation

The C830C is fully driverless under normal circumstances, using CBTC which do not require traditional "fixed-block track circuits" for determining train position. Instead, they rely on "continuous two-way digital communication" between each controlled train and a wayside control center, which may control an area of a railroad line, a complete line, or a group of lines. Recent studies consistently show that CBTC systems reduce life-cycle costs for the overall rail property and enhance operational flexibility and control.

The car numbers of the trains range from 841x to 864x, where x depends on the carriage type. Individual cars are assigned a 4 digit serial number by the rail operator SMRT Trains. A complete three-car trainset consists of one trailer(Tp) and two driving motor cars(Mc1 & Mc2) permanently coupled together. For example, set 843 consists of carriages 8431, 8432, 8433.
