Amrita School of Business (ASB), Coimbatore is located at Amrita Nagar, Ettimadai, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India. It is part of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a private university established under section-3 of UGC Act. Housed in a campus adjoining the foothills of western ghats, the school endeavors to provide professional education in business management "not just for a living but for life" reflecting the vision of its chancellor AMMA, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi[1].[2] [3] [4]

History

Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore started as Amrita Institute of Management(AIM) in the year 1996.[5] Right from the inception, the school focuses not only on contemporary and emerging business and management practices but also focuses on Sustainable Development, Business Ethics and Social Responsibility [6][7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14][15]

Rankings

ASB, Coimbatore as a constitutent school of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" grade, the highest possible grade for the second time in a row.[16]

The High Power committee appointed by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to review the functioning of all Deemed universities, has listed Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, of which Amrita School of Business is a constituent School in Category "A", which is a list of all deemed universities who are completely justified their continuance as Deemed Universities.[17]

Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore is a member of AACSB, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and in the process of getting accredited.[18]

Partnerships

TELECOME Ecole de Management Paris

After completing 5 trimesters in Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore, students can spend two semesters at Telecome ecole de management (TEM), paris, the first one for classes and the second one for internship with a requirement of 30 ECTS credits. This enables the students get a dual degree of MBA from Amrita University and MSc in Business Administration and International Management from TEM, paris. [24]

Industry Aligned Curriculum

Curriculum of Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore programs is created by its Academic Council incorporating the intellectual contributions of Industry experts, Academic researches, Faculty and even Alumni so that it meets industry expectations. [25] [26]

Partnership with IBM on Business Analytics. Predictive Analytics using IBM SPSS, Descpritive Analtyics using IBM Cognos and Big data Analytics are integrated into the curriculum. All faculty are trained by IBM and options to do certification in the above areas are available for students. An IBM-ASB Business Analytics Lab is a part of Amrita School of Business Academic block.

On Tuesday, August 4th, 2015, the IBM Business Analytics Lab was inaugurated by Mr. Kaushik Bhaskar, Vice President - Information Integration & Governance Software, and India Software Labs IBM India and Dr.P. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.[27] [28]

SAP Academic Alliance Partnership

Trained by SAP Academic Alliance community, faculty train students in transactions and configurations of different modules of SAP including Materials Management (MM), Financial Accounting and Cost Accounting (FI/CO), Production Planning (PP), Inventory Management / Warehouse Management (IM / WM), Human Capital Management (HCM), Project Systems (PS), Sales and Distribution (SD) and many more.

Specializations

Amrita School of Business not only offers courses to specialize in horizontal functions of management like Finance, Human Resources, Information Systems, Marketing and Operations but also equips students to get mastery over contemporary and emerging business verticals like Business Analytics, Digital Marketing and E-commerce, Retail, Logistics and Supply Chain Management etc. There are courses like Management Beyond Profit, Management of Self for Success and Happiness, Business Across Cultures, Diversity Management etc. which are called General Management elective courses and do not form part of any domain.

Academics of ASB, Coimbatore is driven by choice based credit system and the performance of a student is assessed using CGPA.

Learning @ ASB is automated using Amrita University Management System(AUMS) otherwise called as Amrita Vidya. This Learning Management System allows students to register online in courses, take quizzes, download & upload assignments, see their attendance status and all their marks and grades as soon as the faculty enables them to view.

Summer Internships

Between the first year which gives a breadth and footing on the basic domains and the second year which gives the depth or concentration in a domain, the 8-week Summer Internship which has to be done in the real-time environment of the Industry gives not just exposure but a life-time experience of the agile, time and target driven corporate world to every ASBian. Guided, monitored and assessed by a faculty and Industry mentor, the Internship comes with milestones of Interim presentations and reports. From 2015, Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore assesses the summer internships with a poster presentation. Restricted to two posters hanged in the wall in an auditorium, the exhibition-style presentations are delivered to faculty, students, industry visitors and other audience with an arrangement for two days. Live-In Labs (LILA) - Rural Internships

Amrita Serve (Self Reliant Villages) is a project of Mata Amritanandamayi Math. Village clusters are identified in different parts of India and the volunteers, research scholars and students of Math and Amrita University devote many days staying in the villages identifying and analyzing the problem and coming up with solutions that can be implemented with the help of the government and many that are home grown in the research labs of Amrita University like Ammachi Labs, Amrita Create Labs etc. The solutions range from tablet based education for children in local languages and english, Building toilets by training women through tablets on masonry, plumbing, carpentry etc,.[31]

A group of students guided by a faculty of Amrita School of Business, spend a week in a village of their choice to identify and analyze problems of villages. While the first trip focuses on problems, the second trip is designated for solutions. [32]

Doctoral Program in Management (Ph.D.)

Scholars are recruited through a Research Aptitude Test and Personal Interview for Part-time and full-time doctoral programs

Faculty

Full time faculty in Amrita school of business come with an academic and research track record coupled with Industry experience. Qualified in institutions like Berkeley, Wharton, Cornell, City University of Hong Kong, ICAI, IIMs, IITs, JNU, Kellogg, Stern NYU, Texas-Austin, XLRI etc. coupled with corporate experience gained in Fortune 500 companies like Fortune 500 such as Coca Cola, Philips, IBM, Ponds, BHEL, Biocon, ESAB, ICICI Bank, SAIL, Blue Star etc. the faculty body comprising them exhbits diversity. Augmented by Part-time, Adjunct and Visiting faculty the quality of classroom delivery, assessment mechanisms, project mentoring and Career counseling of Amrita School of Business faculty is comparable to the top B-schools of the world.[33] [34][35]

Alumni

While individual mentoring is available for a student in a specific domain or Industry by an alumnus/alumna, structured training sessions in the form of Alumni Boot-camp is organized at least once in a year.

Many senior alumni/alumnae work in senior strategic functions of blue chip multinationals like Apple, Google, TCS, Microsoft, Deloitte, Paypal, AOL, Ernest & Young, Jones Lang LaSalle etc [44]

Center for Corporate and Industry Relations

Center for Corporate and Industry Relations (CIR) is a body that handles corporate relations, Life-skills Training and Placements. The work of CIR starts from day one of an ASBian's (students of ASB call themselves ASBians) life covering training on Verbal, Quantitative and Soft skills, preparation of resume, mock interviews and Group Discussions and till Summer and Final placements.[45] [46] [47] [48]

CIR works in a building with learning centers, Murali Krishna Hall (an air-conditined seminar hall), conference rooms, Personal Interview rooms, faculty offices and a computer laboratory.

CIR spearheads Alumni relations through a portal on Alma connect.[49] Frequent chapter meetings are arranged in all metros and Tier-2 cities in India and even abroad like UAE.

Academic Block

Classrooms with furniture for students to plug in and work with laptops in instructor-led hands-on sessions, elevated platform for faculty with acoustics, projection and computing aids, an atrium, an executive classroom with gallery type seating and air-conditioning for colloquia, student lounges with furniture for groups works , the academic premise is wi-fi enabled.

Library

Accommodation

Students of ASB, Coimbatore are accommodated in a single-occupancy post graduate hostel where every room has a window and balcony. Each room has a cot and locker facilities. Male Students reside in Gautama Bhavanam and Female students reside in Gargi Bhavanam. Entire Amrita Nagar has 24 x 7 power supply ensured by two power houses with back-up power generators. The hostels have wi-fi hotspots, filtered drinking water, washing areas, Televisions and reading rooms with newspapers and magazines

Dining

A Mess which servesVegetarian food in a buffet-style is attached to the hostel. Tea, Coffe, Milk and Refreshments are served in the morning and evening in the hostels itself. Three canteens near Academic Block I, Amrita School of Business and Academic Block - II serve vegetarian food, refreshments, hot and cold beverages from 7 AM to 8 PM.

Guest House

The Central Guest House with lawns and a park, has 20 dual occupancy Air-conditioned rooms, 4 suites, 20 dual occupancy non-air conditioned rooms. All rooms have Water Heaters, Laundry Facility, Wi-fi, Telephone facility and have 24x7 power supply. The Dining Hall serves a Buffet-style Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. It provides services for Parents, Alumni, Visiting Faculty and Corporate executives.

The Conference Hall in the Guest house is a venue for Board Meetings, Press Meets, Seminars and conferences.[50]

Auditoriums

Sri Krishna Hall, a 300-seater Auditorium is located at Amrita School of Business academic block. This Auditorium is used for Inaugural and Farewell functions, Pragati the B-fest, Utsav the monsoon fest of intra-mural arts,cultural and literary events, Kalakruthi, the spring fest, workshops, symposiums, seminars, colloquia etc.

An Auditorium with a capacity of 1000 seats is located adjoining Amrita School of Business which is used for university-level functions like convocation, gokulashtami celebrations, Amritotsavam of Amrita School of Engineering etc.

Medical Aid

The Medical Aid facility in Amrita University campus not just caters to Faculty, Students, Staff and campus residents but also to the people of neighboring villages. While three doctors and eight nurses give a 24x7 service, ten beds are available for patients to be in observation. The Medical aid has facilities for emergency like Pharmacy, ECG Machine, Nebulisar, Oxygen cylinders, Defibrillator, and Pulse OXYmeter. Two Ambulances are always ready to transport patients to city hospitals in case of emergencies.

Gymnasiums

Three gymnasiums are available in Amrita University campus with a mix of cardio and strength equipments. While Up Ride Bicycle (Viva fitness), Motorized Treadmill (Motus 900), Eleptical Cross Trainer (Motus &Viva Fitness)complete the cardio line up, the strength menu comprises of a list of multi gyms

"Arogya Sadanam" - An Indoor sports complex to the size of 8200 square feet, with 4 synthetic shuttle badminton courts, 2500 square feet of gymnasium is located near Gautama Bhavanam, the hostel of Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore.

Shri. Omkar Singh ,a triple gold medalist in shooting at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi inaugrated Arogya Sadanam on February 18,2011.

Swimming Pool

The swimming pool which is built according to olympic standards of 50m X 25m, containing 2.4 million liters of water and a state-of-the-art machinery that can purify the water in 6 Hours. A Toddler's pool is used by professionals for warm-up, children and can be used for even babies.

Synthetic Tennis Courts

Giving the advantage of Even Bounce and Zero Maintenance, day-night matches are conducted in the synthetic Tennis courts

Festivals

Pragati

Pragati is a national-level b-fest attended by undergraduate and post-graduate students of universities and b-schools in India. The fest has games to apply the knowledge gained in different domains, Business quiz, Paper presentation, B-plan contest, Best Manager contest etc. [51]

Utsav

Utsav is a monsoon fest of Intra - mural Art, Cultural and Literary events. The first and second year students of Amrita School of Business are grouped into four competitive teams that participate in Art events like Face painting, Pencil Sketching, Rangoli Cultural events like Solo and group dances, Solo and group songs, Mime, Adaptunes, Mock-rock and Literary events like Poetry writing. The team which wins is awarded a rolling trophy and the best male and female over-all performers are awarded with Mr. Utsav and Ms.Utsav titles

Kalakruti

Kalakruti is a spring fest. It emphasizes participation, cooperation , collaboration and not competition.

Clubs and Committees

Team Colloquia

Colloquia can take any form as a Lecture, Seminar, Symposium or workshop. The resource person can be from Industry or Not for profit Organizations or Academia or even an alumni. Team Colloquia takes care of identifying and inviting resource persons, event management, hospitality and transport , Audio-visual recording of the sessions etc. [54]

Festcom

Decoration, Event Management, Food and Purchase for all the major festivals of Amrita School of Business is handled by the student body called Festival committee or Festcom

Placecom

The Student body called Placement committee or Placecom liaises with Faculty, CIR, students and companies in the process of Announcement of placement process including time, venue and job descriptions, Application & Resume submissions, hospitality and transport and Event Management for Summer Internship and Final placements.

Social Responsibility

Village Outreach

Every Saturday evening, a group of students from Amrita School of Business led by a faculty, go to the nearby slum of ettimadai village and conduct tuition classes on Mathematics, English, Science etc. for school children. The sessions end with singing and distribution of fruits and study material. [55]

Amala Bhratam - The Cleanliness Drive

Student volunteers participate regularly in Amala Bharatam, a cleanliness drive. [56] A project of cleaning of Sabarimala hill, (where the second largest hindu religious gathering in India take place) is undertaken before the pilgrim season starts. [57] [58]
