Sirajganj is a town in North-Bengal Bangladesh, lying just west of the Brahmaputra River and beside of Jamuna River, about 70 mi. (110 km) northwest of Dhaka.
Overview
It is the main town in Sirajganj District. It consists of 15 wards and 52 mohallas. The town has a population of about 127,147. It was once considered among Calcutta and Narayanganj as a principal jute trade centre. It is still has an important jute industry, with products traded via road, rail, and river. Its jute mills were the first in the Bengal area. The city has several college campuses connected with the University of Rajshahi.
History
During British Rule, Sirajganj was a town in the Pabna District of Eastern Bengal and Assam. Its location on the right bank of the Jamuna River or main stream of the Brahmaputra was a 6-hour journey by steamer from the railway terminus at Goalundo. It is the chief river mart for jute in northern Bengal, with several jute presses. The jute mills were closed after the earthquake of 1897. Transport
Jamuna Bridge, the largest bridge of Bangladesh is situated here.Through this bridge it is connected to Dhaka the capital and the eastern part of country with both road and railways. It is a river port also. Besides it has a well-developed connection with northern and southern Bangladesh also.
Education
There are many schools and colleges in the district of Sirajganj - see this institution list.B.L.Govt. High School (1869), Tarash Islamia Pilot High School (1962), Lido Kindergarten and Junior High School Tarash(2002), Shaleha Ishaque Girls School, Salop High School (estabd. in 1905), Chowbari High School, Chandaikona M.L High School, Dhanghara High School an, Harina Bagbati High School, Boyra Bhennabari High School and Ghorachara High School are a few among them. The most famous colleges in Sirajganj are 'Sirajganj Govt. University College' and Ullapara Science College. Fuljore Degree College, situated by the side of the approach road of the Jamuna Bridge, Salop College in Ullapara and Kuripara College(1999) [1] in the village of Shaheed M. Monsur Ali in Sirajganj Sadar Upozila in recent years are playing an important role to educate the rural peoples in Sirajganj. The one and only English- medium school in Sirajganj is Jewel's Oxford International School and College. Each year a good amount of student goes to America for exchange program. There is also an English- version school in Sirajganj named Sirajganj Collectorate School and College. There are also many Diploma in Engineering Institution in this district such as "Shahzadpur Institute of Engineering & Technology (SIET)" is placed in Talgasi (East Side of Jamuna Textile Mill), Shahzadpur Upazilla-6770 in Shahzadpur district which is conducted by Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB).
