The Krishna Heart and Super Specialty Institute, also known as Krishna Heart Institute or Krishna Hospital, located in Ahmedabad, India, was established in 2000 as a high-end medical facility, specializing in heart diseases. The hospital expanded its field of work into different medical branches and has performed over 25,000 lifesaving procedures including 4000 bypass surgeries. The hospital was acquired by Shalby Ltd. in 2012.
History
Krishna Hospital was Gujarat's first corporate hospital.[1] It was conceived by Dr. Atul Chokshi, an interventional cardiologist practising in New York, his brother Animesh Chokshi and 100 other doctors, most of them living in the United States.[1] Dr. Chokshi being a devote of Lord Krishna and a reader of Bhagavad Gita, named the establishment "Krishna Heart Institute".[2]
Krishna Hospital is partnered with MedSolution, a medical tourism company located in Vancouver, Canada.[3] It was built with a capacity of 140 beds and specialized operating theaters.[1] The institute is the first in India to set up a specialized ISO-100 operating theater.[4] The air in the operating theater is refreshed 130 times per hour which maintains a noninfectious and clean environment.[5]
Acquisition by Shalby
Due to increase in the number of corporate hospitals more proximal to and inside the city area, Krishna Hospital witnessed a decline in number of patients because of its distant location. In October 2012, Shalby Ltd. acquired 86% of the share in Yogeshwar Healthcare Ltd. which ran the Krishna Hospital. The deal was approximated to be of ₹75 crore (US$9.0 million)-₹80 crore (US$9.6 million). Krishna Hospital, after the acquisition, would serve as a place to direct the over-flow of the patients from Shelby hospital. A plan to renovate the hospital was passed and 110 beds were to be added to the 140-bed hospital.[1]
Facilities and treatments
Krishna Hospital, having a number of patients from North Gujarat, Saurashtra and Rajastha,[1] also receives patients from around the world.[6] It is known for innovative diagnostic and treatment procedures and extensive work in cardiology and joint replacement.[7] The institute uses pioneering medical techniques in the field of cardiac care, including beating heart bypass surgeries and radial angiography.[4] The hospital began its work in cardiac department, providing:[5]
They expanded and started providing the following procedures:[5]
- Joint replacement for Hip and Knee
- Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

- Minimally-invasive procedures.
Dr. Dinesh Mistry, a physician at the Golden Medical Clinic in Golden, BC praised the standards of the hospital by saying that "Krishna Heart Institute is comparable to any hospital in Canada, in the service, quality of medical care and professionalism."[3] As of 2010, Krishna hospital has performed over 25,000 life-saving procedures including 4000 open heart bypass surgeries.[2]
