Zeman (pronounced Zehmahn) was the title of the lowest-ranking Hungarian, Slovak and Czech nobility. In the hierarchy it was placed under the baron. Zemans usually only held significance within a given town or village, and many were not exceptionally wealthy. They were somewhat equivalent to the English squires.
