EXO (/ˌɛks ˈoʊ/ EKS-oh; Template:Lang-ko) is a South Korean-Chinese boy band produced by S.M. Entertainment that debuted in 2012. EXO comprises twelve members who are separated into two subgroups, EXO-K and EXO-M. The band has been promoting with 9 members since 2015. The former releases music in South Korea, while the latter promotes music in mainland China. EXO's name was taken from exoplanet,[1] a term referring to planets outside of the Solar System.

Suho (Korean: 수호; Hanja: 守護), born Kim Jun-myeon (Korean: 김준면; Hanja: 金俊勉) on (1991-05-22) May 22, 1991 (age 33)[2] in Seoul, South Korea, is the leader and lead vocalist of EXO. At sixteen, he became the first member of EXO to become a trainee at SM,[3] and was discovered through the company's street casting system in 2006. In 2007, Suho was cast as an extra in the Super Junior film, Attack on the Pin-Up Boys, and in 2008, he made a brief appearance in TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" with fellow Exo bandmates Kai and Chanyeol.

On February 15, 2012, Suho was introduced as the tenth member of EXO.[4] Pursuing a degree in acting, he currently attends Korea National University of Arts and is ranked in the top 50 of 400 students at the school.[5] He enjoys listening to funk rock and has expressed his admiration for Super Junior's leader, Leeteuk, and TVXQ's leader, U-Know Yunho.[6] In February 2014, Suho became an MC of popular music show Inkigayo[7] alongside fellow bandmember Baekhyun and also ZE:A's Kwanghee. They were later joined by actress Kim Yoo-jung. Both Suho and Baekhyun left the show on November 16, 2014 to focus on EXO's comeback in 2015.

Suho was cast as the lead in the Christmas movie Saving Santa, dubbing the voice of the main character Bernard, along with Apink's Jung Eun-ji and Shin Dong-yup. In January 2015, he starred in the S.M. Entertainment musical School OZ, playing the character of Hans with f(x)'s Luna, SHINee's Key, Xiumin, TVXQ's Changmin and Red Velvet's Seulgi.[8] Suho is the next member that will be making his movie debut through the independent film titled Glory Day, starring Ji-soo and Shinhwa's Kim Dong-wan. The filming will starting in mid-May.[9]

Baekhyun

Baekhyun (Korean: 변백현; Hanja: 邊伯賢), born Byun Baek-hyun on (1992-05-06) May 6, 1992 (age 32)[2] in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is one of the main vocalists of EXO.[10] He is a former student of Jungwon High School. Baekhyun was a member of the school's band and attended several musical festivals, later winning an award at a local rock festival. He joined S.M. Entertainment in 2011 through the S.M. Casting System.[11] Baekhyun was studying for his college musical entrance exams when he joined the label.[3]

Baekhyun was one of the last members to join EXO,[12] and was revealed as the group's ninth member on January 30, 2012.[13] Byun has cited Rain as one of his main influences and hopes to emulate Rain's "well-rounded" success.[11]

In 2012, Baekhyun was featured in the music video of "Twinkle" by Girls' Generation-TTS together with fellow members Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun. Baekhyun has been a host of Korean music show Inkigayo since February 2014 alongside ZE:A's Kwanghee, actress Lee Yu-bi (later being replaced by actress Kim Yoo-jung) and fellow member Suho. On November 16, 2014, both Baekhyun and Suho left Inkigayo to focus on EXO's comeback in 2015.

In July 2014, he starred in a Korean adaptation of the musical Singin' in the Rain produced by SM C&C.[14]

Baekhyun released the song 'Beautiful' for the web-drama EXO Next Door on 22 April 2015. It became the first OST single from a web drama to top digital charts.[15][16] At the end of April it was announced that Baekhyun will be making his big screen debut through the action film Dokgo, starring Yeo Jin-goo.[17] On May 15, 2015; Baekhyun, Chanyeol and Chen with other artists such as Girl's Day, Sistar, Niel and Ailee sang the KBS1 Special Program I Am Korea theme song, "The Day We Met", for Gwangbok's 70th Anniversary".[18] Baekhyun and Chanyeol also appeared on KBS Superman is Back, babysitting Lee Hwi-jae's sons.[19] In 2016, Baekhyun would be making his drama debut in Moon Lovers, a Korean remake of the classic Chinese drama Scarlet Heart.

Chanyeol

Chanyeol (Korean: 박찬열; Hanja: 朴燦烈), born Park Chan-yeol on (1992-11-27) November 27, 1992 (age 32)[2] in Seoul, South Korea, is the main rapper of EXO.[20] He attended Hyundai Chungun High School in Dong-gu, Ulsan and was admitted to a private acting institution when he was sixteen years old.[3] Chanyeol has been a fan of musical instruments since his primary school years and has cited the film School of Rock to be his main influence in inspiring him to learn the drums.

During middle school, Chanyeol formed the band "Heavy Noise" with his friends.[12] After winning second place in a televised uniform modeling contest in 2008,[21] Chanyeol successfully auditioned for S.M. Entertainment through the S.M. Casting System. During this time, he was involved in his school's band, "Seiren."[12] He made several media appearances prior to his debut with EXO, including TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" with Suho and Kai in 2008, and in 2010, he starred in the music video of Girls' Generation Japanese single, "Genie". He was also featured as in the music video of Girls' Generation-TTS's "Twinkle" along with fellow members Kai, Sehun, and Baekhyun.

Chanyeol was the twelfth and last member of EXO to be formally introduced to the public, on February 23, 2012. He cites Jason Mraz and Eminem to be his biggest influences[22] Chanyeol guest starred in the second episode of the 2013 sitcom, Royal Villa, with fellow member Sehun. He also appeared in K.Will's music video "You Don't Know Love".

In 2014 Chanyeol was a member of SBS's Law of the Jungle in Micronesia and the first season of SBS's Roommate but left in September because of scheduling conflicts. He made his big screen debut in the 2015 film Salut d'Amour alongside Moon Ga-young and Han Ji-min, the former having co-starred with Chanyeol in EXO's web drama EXO Next Door. He was also featured in the 2015 JTBC's variety show Dating Alone. Chanyeol would be taking on his first lead role on the big screen in the Korean-Chinese film So I Married My Anti-fan, which also stars Girls' Generation's Seohyun.

D.O.

D.O. (Template:Lang-ko), born Do Kyung-soo (Korean: 도경수; Hanja: 都暻秀) on (1993-01-12) January 12, 1993 (age 31)[2] in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, is one of the main vocalists of EXO. D.O. has been singing since primary school and was an avid participant in local singing competitions throughout his high school career. In 2010, he was recommended to audition for S.M. Entertainment after winning at a local singing festival.[23] He subsequently became an S.M. Entertainment trainee during his last two years of high school.[12] He performed Na Yoon-kwon's "Anticipation" and Brown Eyed Soul's "My Story" at his S.M. audition.[23]

D.O. was formally introduced as the eighth member of EXO on January 30, 2012.[13] His stage name is derived from his family name, Do.[24] He sees Yoo Young-jin, S.M.'s music producer, as his role model.[25] On July 29, 2013, he was featured in f(x)'s song "Goodbye Summer", a track from their album Pink Tape.

D.O. made his film debut in the movie Cart. He became 2nd member from EXO to release his own solo OST "Crying Out" (외침) for the movie.[26] In the same year, he also played the role of Han Kang Woo in the SBS' drama It's Okay, That's Love, starring Jo In-sung and Gong Hyo-jin as the lead roles.[27] With his acting in the drama, D.O. was nominated for and won several awards as a new actor. In May 2015, SM confirmed that D.O. would take on his first lead role in a big screen piece, Pure Love, as a young man in love with a sick girl in a relationship of innocent love. He would also be starring in the movie Hyung together with Jo Jung-suk and Park Shin-hye.

Kai

Kai (Template:Lang-ko) was born Kim Jong-in (Korean: 김종인; Hanja: 金鍾仁) on (1994-01-14) January 14, 1994 (age 30)[2] in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. Being the first EXO member to sign with S.M. Entertainment, Kai joined the company after winning in the 10th S.M. Youth Best Contest in 2007, at thirteen years old. He said that it was Shinhwa who inspired him to be a dancer.[23]

Known as the group's main dancer, Kai has been dancing since he was eight years old and was trained in jazz dance and ballet. He stated that his parents initially wanted him to learn Taekwondo and the piano, but he quickly lost interest in both. After watching The Nutcracker when he was in fourth grade, Kai expressed his wish to study ballet professionally. He developed his current technical expertise of hip hop, popping, and locking after joining S.M. Entertainment.[23] In 2008, Kai made a brief appearance in TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" along with Suho and Chanyeol.

Kai was the first of the twelve EXO members to be formally introduced to the public through teaser trailers. His first teaser was released on December 23, 2011.[28] He appeared in twelve more trailers released in the next three months, and had his first televised performance with Lu Han, Chen and Tao on SBS's Gayo Daejun event on December 29, 2011. Kai graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2012.

Kai is also associated with the promotional singing group, "Younique Unit", with fellow member Lu Han, as well as dance group, "S.M. The Performance", with Lay. He also appeared in Girls' Generation-TTS's "Twinkle" music video with fellow members Sehun, Baekhyun and Chanyeol. In 2014, he was featured in Shinee's Lee Taemin's song "Pretty Boy".[29]

Sehun

Sehun (Korean: 오세훈; Hanja: 吳世勳), born Oh Se-hun on (1994-04-12) April 12, 1994 (age 30)[2] in Seoul, South Korea, is the lead dancer and rapper of the group. He is also the youngest in EXO. Sehun was scouted by a casting agent on the streets when he was twelve, and was finally cast into S.M. Entertainment in 2008, after going through four auditions in two years. On January 10, 2012, he was introduced as the fifth member of EXO.[30] He graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2013.

Sehun made a brief appearance in Girls' Generation-TTS's music video for "Twinkle" alongside fellow members Baekhyun, Chanyeol, and Kai. He also guest starred in the second episode of the 2013 sitcom, Royal Villa, with Chanyeol. In 2015, Sehun was featured in BoA's music video for "Who Are You" from her eighth Korean-language studio album, Kiss My Lips.

EXO-M

Xiumin

Xiumin (Chinese: 秀珉; pinyin: Xiùmǐn; Template:Lang-ko), born Kim Min-seok (Korean: 김민석; Hanja: 金珉錫) on (1990-03-26) March 26, 1990 (age 34),[2] is from Guri, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He is the lead vocalist and dancer of the group. In 2008, at the age of 18, he was cast into S.M. Entertainment after winning second place in the S.M. Everysing Contest. Xiumin was formally introduced as the seventh member of EXO on January 26, 2012 following a joint teaser with Kai.[31][32] He is currently serving as the group's lead vocalist and lead dancer within the group. Xiumin attended Inchang High School, and is former schoolmates with Infinite's Dongwoo.

In 2013, Xiumin was featured on the music video of "Gone" by Lovelyz member JIN, alongside actress Kim Yoo-jung.,[33] making it his first acting appearance.

In January 2015, he starred in the S.M. Entertainment musical School OZ, playing the character of Aquila with f(x)'s Luna, SHINee's Key, Suho, TVXQ's Changmin and Red Velvet's Seulgi.[8] Xiumin also guested on three consecutive episodes of JTBC's Crime Scene 2, taking on the role of a ballad singer, vocal singer and manager. In May 2015, Xiumin would be making his big-screen debut in a historical movie titled Kim Sun Dal directed by Park Dae Min, starring alongside actor Yoo Seung-ho. In October 2015, Xiumin was casted in the web drama Falling For Challenge with Kim So-eun as the lead role. He also released his first solo OST "Falling For You" for the drama.

Lay

Lay (Template:Lang-ko), born Zhang Yixing (simplified Chinese: 张艺兴; traditional Chinese: 張藝興; pinyin: Zhāng Yǐxīng) on (1991-10-07) October 7, 1991 (age 33),[2] is from Changsha, Hunan, China. He is the main dancer of EXO. Lay was a local child star in Hunan, having won third place in a competition hosted by the popular TV program, Star Academy (明星學院) in 2005. He also appeared in an episode of Yue Ce Yue Kai Xin (越策越開心) and Liu Na's variety show, Na Ke Bu Yi Yang (娜可不一樣) that same year.

Lay joined S.M. Entertainment in 2008 after a successful audition with the company's global casting system in Changsha. At the time of the auditions, he was 16 years old and was studying for his college entrance exams.[31] In 2011, prior to debuting with Exo, he briefly worked for SHINee in their concert tour as Jonghyun's dance replacement. Lay was formally introduced as a member of EXO on January 17, 2012.[34] He is also associated with the group, S.M. The Performance, with bandmate Kai.

Lay was ranked 5th on Baidu's “2014 Top 10 Most Popular Celebrities” list, along with label-mates, Victoria of f(x) and Luhan.[35] In March 2015, S.M. Entertainment announced that they have established a personal studio for Lay for his individual activities in China.[36] For the June 19th edition of "Music Billboard Charts," Lay was a special temporary MC.[37] He joined Chinese variety show, Go Fighting!, as a cast member in May 2015.[38] He will make his Chinese film debut with Oh My God[39]; and star in a couple of movies including Ex-Files 2, Kung Fu Yoga as well as Biyeon with f(x)'s Krystal. Lay would also be appearing in his first Chinese drama To Be A Better Man in 2016, as well as web-drama Let's Open The Old Nine Gates.

Chen

Chen (Template:Lang-ko) is one of the main vocalists of EXO. Born Kim Jong-dae (Korean: 김종대; Hanja: 金鐘大) on (1992-09-21) September 21, 1992 (age 32)[2] in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, Chen has one older brother, Kim Jong-deok. Chen was the last EXO member scouted by S.M. Entertainment, through the S.M. Casting System in early 2011.

Chen was the fourth member to be formally introduced to the public, on December 29, 2011.[40] Along with Lu Han, Tao, and Kai, Chen had his first televised performance at the SBS Gayo Daejun event on December 29, 2011.

On February 4, 2014, SM revealed that the group SM the Ballad would make a comeback with new members, including Chen. He sang the Chinese version of the title track, "Breath", with Zhang Liyin, as well as the tracks "A Day Without You" with SHINee's Jonghyun and "When I Was... When U Were..." with f(x)'s Krystal for SM the Ballad's second mini album SM the Ballad Vol. 2 – Breath.[41]

Chen also sang "Best Luck" for SBS' drama It's Okay, That's Love and received awards in the 5th So-Loved Awards and the 16th Seoul International Youth Film Festival under the categories "Best OST by a Male Artist" and "Best OST Song" respectively.[42][43] He was invited as a special performer to the 2014 APAN Star Awards on November 11, 2014, where he performed the track live.[44]

On April 11, 2015, Chen made his hosting debut as a special MC for the Korean music show Show! Music Core.[45] On May 15, 2015; Chen, Chanyeol and Baekhyun with other artists such as Girl's Day, Sistar, Niel and Ailee sang a KBS1's Special Program I Am Korea theme song "The Day We Met" for Gwangbok 70th Anniversary.[18] Chen participated in and became the runner-up in the eleventh round of King of Mask Singer under the name "Legendary Guitar Man".[46] It was announced in July 2015 that Chen would be starring in Korean adaption of the musical In The Heights as Benny.
