Kershaw as a surname derives from a topographical identifier in the northern dialect of Middle English: kirk "church" and shaw "grove". [citation needed] Places named Kirkshaw include Kirkshaw in the parish of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, and two hamlets in West Yorkshire.
