Phil Kenzie
Phil Kenzie is an British alto saxophone player and rock and roll musician. He is "[c]onsidered one of the greatest rock 'n' roll sax players of all time."[1]
Born in Liverpool, Kenzie's first band was The Pressmen.[1] The band sometimes shared billing with The Beatles.[1]
Kenzie has toured with Eagles, Graham Nash, Carly Simon, David Crosby, Black Sabbath, Jackson Browne, Alan Parsons, David Essex, Leo Sayer, Wishbone Ash, Manfred Mann Chapter Three, Annie Lennox, The Pointer Sisters, The Coasters, The Temptations, and Rod Stewart, Eric Carmen, America, Vince Gill, and Debbie Gibson, among others.[1]
The Beatles used Kenzie on their album Let it Be, and did the intro for Eagles' track "The Long Run".[1]
Kenzie's sax is featured on the Al Stewart hit record "Year of the Cat", highlighting the bridge, as well as on Stewart's "Time Passages".[1]
Kenzie also served as arranger for Manfred Mann, David Bowie, Steven Stills, Peter Frampton, Stevie Nicks, and Rosanne Cash.[1]
As a session player, Kenzie worked on Roger Daltrey's albums Ride a Rock Horse and One Of The Boys, and Paul McCartney's Band on the Run. He also worked on both the live show and the movie version of Rocky Horror Picture Show.[1] He also played on the sessions for Poco's album Legend, in particular on their song "Heart of the Night". The arrangement to work with Poco was thanks to the band having the same manager as did Al Stewart.
He is credited as co-producer of Year of the Cat, which was partly recorded in Kenzie's studio.[1]
In all, Kenzie has nineteen albums certified gold or platinum.[1]
In January 2015, Kenzie released a new CD and kicked off his S.O.S.S (Save Our Sax Solo) tour on the 15th at Jazziz Nightlife in Boca Raton, Florida.[1]
