The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) (English: Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador) is a Catholic university founded in 1946 in Quito, Ecuador.[3]

History

Pontifical universities are "academic institutes established or approved directly by the Holy See, composed of three main ecclesiastical faculties (Theology, Philosophy, and Canon Law) and at least one other faculty. They deal specifically with Christian revelation and related disciplines and the Church’s mission of spreading the Gospel."[4] In the three ecclesiastical faculties, Pontifical universities follow a European system of degrees, granting the baccalaureate, the licentiate, and the doctorate. The licentiate suffices for seminary teachers and ecclesiastical judges.

The University opened in the Fall of 1946, with Carlos María de la Torre, archbishop of Quito, officiating. Aurelio Espinosa Pólit of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) was the first rector. That Fall there were 54 students and jurisprudence was the one faculty.[5]

Pope Francis visited the campus of PUCE on his trip to South America in July 2015.[6][7]

Location

The principal campus of the University is in Quito. Other campuses are in Ambato (established in 1982), Esmeraldas (1981), Ibarra (1976), Santo Domingo de los Colorados (1996), and a regional campus in the province of Manabí (1993). The campus in Cuenca later became the Universidad del Azuay. All branches follow the National System PUCE.[8]

Departments

Medical degree

A medical degree is an academic, or even technical, degree awarded for studies in fields associated with medicine and surgery.

The medical school at PUCE strives to cover all areas, professional, scientific, ethical, humanistic, and social responsibility, including basic skills in a second language, being conscious of the cultural diversity of its clientele. It is involved in promotion, prevention, care, rehabilitation, and palliative care to the individual, family, community, and society, within the current legal framework. [2]

School of Communication, Linguistics, and Literature

There are five schools that make up the School of Communications: School of Communication, School of Language and Literature, School of Linguistics, Multilingual School of Business and International Relations, and School of Languages.[13] The School of Linguists pursues the scientific[14] study of language,[15] divided into language form, language meaning, and language in context.[16] [17]

Cultural Center

The P.U.C.E. Cultural Center on the campus in Quito and holds numerous exhibits year round with artists from all over the world.[23][24][25] It is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday. The phone number is 299 1710.[26][27] [28]

Pope Francis visit in July, 2015

Pope Francis was in Quito [29] [30] [31] for a few days in July 2015. During his visit in Quito, Pope Francis was the campus of P.U.C.E [32] on the afternoon of the 7th of July 2015 and spoke to the University. [33] and was able to speak to many thousands on different areas. [34][35] The visit also went with a tour of the The Historic Centre of Quito.[36][37][38]
