AppyParking is UK’s favourite parking app[1] that takes all the stress and guesswork out of parking. AppyParking is free to download[2] and saves users time and money by showing all of the on-street and off-street parking options.[3]

AppyParking have worked with councils[4] across the nation to digitize all the parking regulations. The app makes it really easy for motorists to know where to park by highlighting places in green when they are free to park and closed-off areas in red.[5]

In just a few taps residents can see the ‘Nearest and Cheapest’ parking spaces, including Free areas to park.

AppyParking caters for all drivers by showing disabled bays, electric bays and motorbike bays.[6]

AppyParking has both a consumer and enterprise product, with the consumer app being free on iTunes and Google Play.[7]

The enterprise app, AppyParking Pro,[8] is a paid for service (SaaS) targeting businesses with fleets.[9]

Services

The consumer app allows drivers to have local knowledge about any destination. When green areas appear on the map it means it’s free to park, and red zones show that restrictions still apply. It also covers resident parking bays, pay-and-displays and single yellow lines. The app also identifies electric charging bays, disabled bays, motorcycle bays and the nearest petrol stations.[10]

History

The idea for AppyParking came from Dan Hubert, a former advertising creative who has spent time at many of London's top agencies.[11] In 2012, after having trouble parking when going to a gig at The Royal Albert Hall, he asked a passing traffic warden about the rules for the single yellow lines. Having heard that the rules for this area were to be found a few roads away from the area he was enquiring about, Dan realised that he could help the parking industry. While still working full-time, Dan Hubert started to contact every London borough and digitize their Controlled Parking Zones from basic PDF maps.[12]

In November 2013, Dan teamed up with his co-founder Enric Requena to embark on a shared vision providing parking information from a consumers point of view.[13] In 2014, Yellow Line Parking rebranded as AppyParking. In December 2014, AppyParking graduated from the 14-week Microsoft Ventures Accelerator program in London.[14] In December 2014, AppyParking launched an enterprise app aimed at commercial fleets.[15]

Dan Hubert has been CEO, and Enric Requena has been the CTO since 2013. The company is headquartered in Old Street, London.

UK Parking Problem

Allianz have conducted studies that show the extent of the parking problem in the UK.[16] The Allianz study shows that the average Brit spends 347 days and £34,097.44 on fuel searching for a parking space in their lifetime.

Confusion regarding parking regulations cost UK Motorists £667 million in 2014.

There is even an ITV TV show: Parking Wars that shows the confusion and frustration UK Motorists face regarding parking.[17]

Benefits

AppyParking benefits the consumer by saving them time (less time circling for parking spaces), money (avoid parking fines and cut down on cost of fuel searching for a parking space) and stress (nearest and cheapest parking spaces based on parking regulations are shown).

AppyParking benefits businesses by increasing productivity (less time spent searching for a car space, real-time availability reduces parking time from 20 minutes to 30 seconds) and reducing costs (avoid parking fines, reduced fuel costs).[18]

Cities also benefit through a reduction in pollution.

Features

When green areas appear on the map it means it’s free to park, and red zones show that restrictions still apply. It also covers resident parking bays, pay-and-displays and single yellow lines. The app also identifies electric charging bays, disabled bays, motorcycle bays and the nearest petrol stations.[19]

Partnerships

AppyParking is a private limited company, and part of the Microsoft Ventures Accelerator programme in London,[20] and currently partnered with organisations such as Ordnance Survey, NWave[21] and Ford Motors.

Ford Partnership

In January 2015, Ford announced a partnership with AppyParking at the CES 2015.[22] This partnership comes off the back of AppyParking winning the Ford ‘Traffic Tamer’ app challenge. The partnership will see AppyParking and Ford come together in an experiment in London to help remove the pain from parking.

Internet Of Things

AppyParking has been recognised as a company pushing boundaries andusing data to make cities smarter.

World’s First ‘One Click’ Parking

Described as the ‘Uber of Parking’,[23] AppyParking teamed up with Vodafone xone to trial the world’s first “One Click ParkingTM”. For the first time ever, the driver simply needed to pull into a parking space, tap begin in ‘AppyParking’ and then drive off when they had completed the session.

Drivers were charged for the minutes they have actually parked, not for extra minutes they didn’t use. Equally, not having to carry change, or download numerous mobile apps to pay for parking in different parts of the city is a huge step forwards in terms of user experience.

Pimlico Plumbers trialled ‘One Click Parking’ for one month, drivers found it was quicker and easier to find and pay for parking spaces in central London.

Charlie Mullins, CEO and founder of Pimlico Plumbers[24] said “This app has the potential to save Pimlico Plumbers £100,000 a year.’’

Peter Hillier, an engineer at Pimlico Plumbers who took part in the trial “Time is money at the end of the day and getting two or three tickets a month isn’t uncommon. Sometimes just getting a parking spot feels like a full-time job and the working man really doesn’t need the hassle."[25]

Real-Time Availability

Using the latest sensors and base station technology, AppyParking can quickly and easily provide complete visibility of parking bays throughout the city.[26] The information is relayed through strategically placed base stations which communicate with AppyParking servers to provide a real time picture across the city. The AppyParking apps and website then show, in real time, which bays are available, and which ones are occupied.

AppyParking have trialled the real-time availability in Westminster and have been able to reduce time spent finding a park from 20 minutes to 30 seconds. AppyParking is working with councils to roll out more real-time availability trials.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Studies have shown that 30% of congestion is caused by cars circling for parking spaces.[27] AppyParking is able to reduce the time spent looking for parking spaces by showing drivers the nearest and cheapest parking space, on-street parking based on parking regulations and through real-time availability.

AppyParking wants to help cities become smarter and reduce pollution even more.

Electric Parking Bays

AppyParking shows drivers where they can find the nearest and cheapest Electric Parking Bays in London, Brighton, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bournemouth, Birmingham, Bristol, Norwich and Portsmouth. New cities are being added with this information nationwide.

Disabled Driving Access

AppyParking features disabled bays across the nation to help disabled drivers find the best parking space. CEO Dan Hubert was asked about the harshest parking fine in Warranty Wise, his response was: “In Central London there are unique disabled badge parking rules that don’t comply with the generic blue badge rules, that aren’t signpost. As a result disabled drivers return to their car to find it’s gone. AppyParking is the only app to show all this information to alleviate the situation and to make sure it never happens again.”[28]
