Chad's Gap is a 120-foot (around 36 meters) backcountry gap jump located above the town of Alta in Michigan City, a now deserted mining town, approximately 1km up Grizzly Gulch north east of Alta Ski Area, in Utah, United States.
First jumped in 1999, here's how it went down. It was named for Chad Zurinskas, veteran Snowbird ripper and big air maestro. Chad was once named in Powder Magazine as one of the best skiers in North America. Chad was visionary and conceived of jumping from the top of a large mining tailings pile to the top of another one. Chad and the filmmaker Kris Ostness built a large kicker on the uphill mine tailings pile and prepared the in-run. Chad hit is first and came up short. They realized the in-run would have to start a bit higher. At this point famous French skier Candide Thovex asked if he could hit it. Candide cleared it first, soon followed by Chad. Over the next few years the gap jumps in Michigan City became a high-profile destinations for flying freeskiers.
