Mark Hallman (born August 1, 1951) is an American producer, songwriter, engineer and multi-instrumentalist.[1] He has worked with Carole King[2] (appearing on seven of her albums as a performer and producer), Ani DiFranco, and Eliza Gilkyson.

In the mid-'70s, Hallman was the one of the two principal singer/songwriters for Boulder, Colorado-based country rock band Navarro. Navarro put out two albums on Capitol Records, Listen in 1977 (produced by Hallman) and Straight From the Heart in 1978.[3]

According to a September 22, 1977 Rolling Stone interview with Cameron Crowe, after the band had broken up,[4] Hallman received a phone call from Carole King asking Navarro to be her touring band. King had become aware of Navarro after Dan Fogelberg brought her to a show, Hallman told The Austin Chronicle in a 1996 interview.[5] Hallman also played guitar in Fogelberg's band. [6]

Navarro had also worked with Jerry Jeff Walker, and King, as a fan of his, sought out Navarro to be her touring band. The band, and Hallman in particular, found a quick ally in King. Before long, Hallman was producing King's albums[7] and performing in her band.

Hallman relocated to Austin, Texas with King in 1980 and established himself as a producer with the opening of The Congress House Studio.[8]

In 1995, at the height of her notoriety, independent artist Ani DiFranco chose Hallman's Congress House to record her album Dilate, which began a long musical partnership between the two. The song "Glass House," co-engineered by Hallman off of DiFranco's 1999 CD Little Plastic Castle was nominated for a Grammy in 1998 for Best Female Rock Vocalist.

A feature-length film, The Shopkeeper: A Documentary about Mark Hallman & the Music Business, produced by Hallman client Rain Perry, is scheduled for a 2016 release.[9]
