Entrance of souk El Kmach

Souk El Kmach or the fabrics market is one of the most important souks of the Medina of Tunis . It is the place to sell fabrics and tissues whether they are made in Tunis or imported specially luxury products like silk or Linen .[1]

History

The souk was constructed under the order of the hafside sovereign Abou Amr Uthman in the fifteenth century in the same place of an older souk .

Souk El Kmach goes along with the western facade of the Zitouna Mosque .In fact, it offers easy access to the Zitouna mosque through 3 doors .Also,it's bounded by 3 other souks : Souk El Trouk ,Souk El Leffa and Souk El Nissa . Two doors provide direct access to Souk El Kmach :Souk El Attarine's one is known for his two Spanish- Maghrebi capitals columns .

Description

The souk has three aisles seperated by two rows of columns .The one in the centre allows traffic while the two lateral aisles give access to the stores . All the souk is covered by longitudinal cradles .Yet ,some skylights in the central vault illuminate the place .This lightening system can be found in the stores of the souk too . Among the the monuments of this souk we can mention the Medresa Mouradiya and the Zaouia of the savant Ibn Asfour .
