Gossip Candy is an extended play by Japanese recording artist and songwriter Kumi Koda. It was released on July 7, 2010, by Koda's record label, Rhythm Zone. Koda's fifth extended play, Gossip Candy consists of five recordings; "Lollipop", "Inside Fishbowl", "Outside Fishbowl", "For You", and a cover of Got to Be Real, originally performed by Cheryl Lynn. It was released in three different formats; A digital EP, a stand-alone CD, and a CD and DVD bundle; the middle bundle was re-released as the "Dream Music Park" edition with a bonus baseball cap. The three artworks for the EP depicts Koda posing, with the title of the work superimposed over her. The digital, CD, DVD bundle artwork features a close-up shot of Koda, this artwork was also used for the digital release of the EP. The Dream Music Park edition features three colored pictures of Koda.
Gossip Candy contains predominantly pop rock and dance music. Koda contributed by writing the lyrics to all songs except "Got to Be Real". Several composers were hired to help with the EP's content. Gossip Candy received favourable reviews from music critics who commended the EP's production and commercial appeal. Gossip Candy reached number four on the Oricon Singles Chart, and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for shipments of 100,000 units. "Lollipop", "Inside Fishbowl", and "Outside Fishbowl" served as the promotional singles, while "Lollipop" was certified platinum for 250,000 digital shipments.
Background and composition
On July 1, 2010, Koda announced the release of her summer single Gossip Candy while on her 2010 Universe tour. Koda confirmed that the EP would include four tracks, which were untitled at the time.[1] Gossip Candy is Koda's fifth extended play single, one year after the release of her summer single 3 Splash.[2] Gossip Candy consists of four original recordings and one cover song; "Lollipop", "Inside Fishbowl", "Outside Fishbowl", "For You", and a cover of Got to Be Real, originally performed by Cheryl Lynn.[3]
Gossip Candy opens with the first track, "Lollipop", which has been described as a pop and R&B song.[4] A song that metaphorically describes men as "accessories", "Lollipop" boasts themes of erotica and kawaii culture.[4] Both "Inside Fishbowl" and "Outside Fishbowl" feature the same lyrical content, but are arranged different; both are arranged and composed by Niclas Lundin and Joakim Hahlin.[3] Both tracks were noted for its rock and electronic elements.[5] "For You" has been described as a low-tempo love song.[5]
Promotion
Gossip Candy was released on July 7, 2010 through Rhythm Zone. There are four official versions; a digital EP, a stand-alone CD version, a CD and DVD version, and another CD version which features a baseball cap for the physical single.[3][6][7][8] There are three different cover sleeves for Gossip Candy; the CD, DVD, and digital version features a close up of Koda holding a cupcake. The CD version has Koda eating it, while the DVD and digital version do not.[3][6][8] The Dream Music Park edition features three body shots of Koda, with an lollipop superimposing Koda.[7] Apart from "For You", all recorded songs were promoted through advertisement deals in Japan. "Lollipop" was used as the theme songs for the Music.jp website, Sony Ericsson, Seven-Eleven's Seven Net Shopping tv, and NTV's Happy Music hour.[4] "Inside Fishbowl" was used as the theme song for NTV's Round and Round 99 music show, "Outside Fishbowl" was used as the theme song for NTV's Midnite, and "Got to Be Real" was used as the theme song for Pepsi Japan.[4]
"Lollipop", "Inside Fishbowl", and "Outside Fishbowl" all served as the EP's promotional singles, released on July 7, 2010. "Lick Me" reached number thirty-one on the Japan Hot 100 chart on the week end of July 19, 2010.[9] "Lollipop" was certified platinum for 250,000 downloads in January 2014.[10] "Inside Fishbowl" and "Outside Fishbowl" did not chart in any Japanese music charts, but were marketed as promotional singles by Rhythm Zone.[11] All three songs featured an accompanying music video, which were included on the DVD version of Gossip Candy.[3]
Gossip Candy was performed at the 2010 Dream Music Park concert in Japan.[1] "Lollipop", "Inside Fishbowl", and "Outside Fishbowl" have appeared on several live albums and compilations, released by Koda respectively. "Lollipop", "Inside Fishbowl", and "Outside Fishbowl" have been performed on the Koda Kumi 10th Anniversary Tour,[12] and Koda Kumi Live Tour 2011 Dejavu.[13] "Inside Fishbowl" was performed on her Japonesque tour in 2013.[14] "Lollipop", "Inside Fishbowl", and "Outside Fishbowl" were included on Koda's Summer Single Collection 2013,[15] while "Lollipop" appeared on her 2015 greatest hits album Summer of Love.[16]
Reception
Gossip Candy received favourable reviews from music critics. Chris True from AllMusic highlighted "Lollipop" as a career stand out track from Koda's discography.[17] A reviewer from CD Journal complimented the production of "Lollipop", labelling it a "gracious candy pop chorus".[4] The reviewer also commended Koda's "wide range" and "outstanding" vocal abilities on the EP.[4] An editorial review from Amazon.co.jp complimented Koda's "different" vocals, and praised the songs "rich music".[18]
On the Japanese Oricon Singles Chart, Gossip Candy debuted at number four, Koda's lowwest charting EP on the chart.[19] The EP lasted eleven weeks in the top 100, selling 84,000 units,[20] and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for shipments of 100,000 units;[21] this became Koda's fifth consecutive EP to have shipped over 100,000 units, after Love & Honey (2004),[22] 4 Hot Wave (2006),[23] Moon (2008),[24] and 3 Splash (2009).[25]
