Speranza Ndege

Dr. Speranza Ndege is a Kenyan educator and a director of various institutions.

Biography

Dr. Speranza Ndege is a Senior Lecturer at Kenyatta University with over 20 years experience in teaching, research and training. She is an ICT/e-Learning specialist and a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), St John York University, UK. She holds a B.Ed (Hons), and M.A., degrees both from University of Nairobi; a M.Sc.(CBIS),University of Sunderland (UK), a PhD from Ghent University, Belgium and a Post Graduate Diploma in e-Teaching, Agder University, Norway.

Administratively, Dr. Ndege is the Director, Kenyatta University Television and Radio Services (KUTV & RS) (May 2014 – to-date)http://kutv.co.ke/. She has served the University as Director for 12 years as follows: Director, African Virtual University Learning Centre (2003-2006), Director, e-Learning Coordinating Centre (2007- July 2009), Director, Institute of Open, Distance & e-Learning (August 2009-April 2014). Dr Ndege successfully implemented the first online programmes in Kenya under AVU with Curtin University and Royal Melbourne University, Australia. In 2005, she implemented the first e-Learning programmes in Kenya using the Blackboard LMS and Moodle LMS in 2007 respectively. By the April 2014, Dr Ndege had overseen to the training of 695 University Lecturers in online tutoring and development of 801 teaching modules for online learning. Dr Ndege has much experience in management of online learning/tutoring and Instructional Design. In 2003, she initiated and successfully managed the first online programmes in Kenya and lobbied through the Ministry of Education for the hosting of the first e-Learning Conference in Kenya, an act which led her to be appointed into the International e-Learning Africa, Advisory Committee (2006-to-date). Dr. Ndege has received much training in Information Communication Technology (including Electronic Document Management and Website Design). She is also a CISCO Academy Instructor.

Dr. Ndege was appointed a member of the Planning Committee that led to the establishment of the first NEPAD e-School in Kenya. The success of the 7 Schools saw the dawn of e-Learning in secondary schools. In August 2013, she was appointed a member of the Technical Committee for establishment of National Open University of Kenya (NOUK) which is spearheaded by the Government through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Between 2009-2013, she was the Project Coordinator for Partnership for Higher Education (PHEA) projects at Kenyatta University. The reports generated from the six projects were uploaded online to be accessed as OERs.

In 2010, Dr. Ndege was appointed a Commissioner of the Broadband Commission of Digital Development an initiative of UNESCO and ITU. The Commission’s mandate was to oversee to the acceleration of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through broadband networks. After serving in the Commission for 5 years, Dr Ndege was re-appointed in the same Commission now re-branded Broadband Commission for Sustainable Digital Development to serve for another two years (2015-2017). This is a high level Commission Chaired by His Excellency President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Co-Chaired by Carlos Slim Helú, of Mexico. Dr. Ndege has received Extra Mile Awards for her services in ICT/e-Learning. She has also served in the Top University Management Board for 4 years (2009 - March 2014). She is both a Supervisor and an External Examiner for Masters and PhD students. She has a number of publications in Literature/ICT related areas.

Dr Ndege is married with children who have pursued good careers. Some have acquired university degrees and professionalism in fields such as: International Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, and Civil Engineering (while one is still a student in the university.
