Jai Hemant Shroff (born 2 March 1990)[1][2] better known as Tiger Shroff is an Indian film actor and martial artist.[3] He is the son of Bollywood veteran actor Jackie Shroff, and made his debut opposite Kriti Sanon in Sajid Nadiadwala's film Heropanti, a remake of the Telugu film Parugu.[4][5][6][7][8]
Early life
Tiger Shroff was born as Jai Hemant Shroff[citation needed] on 2 March 1990[9] to Indian film actor Jackie Shroff and Ayesha (née Dutt). He has one sister, Krishna, who is three years younger.[10][11][12] Shroff's paternal grandparents were Kakubhai Shroff, a Gujarati astrologer, and Rita Shroff, an ethnic Turk from Kazakhstan,[13][14] while his maternal grandfather was Air Vice-Marshal Ranjan Dutt, a Bengali, who was married to Claude-Marie de Cavey, a Belgian countess.[15][16][17][18] He did his schooling at the American School of Bombay and attended Amity University.
Shroff helped Aamir Khan build his physique for Dhoom 3.[19] He also holds a fifth degree black belt in Taekwondo.[3]
Acting career
In September 2009, Shroff was said to have declined the lead role in the remake of TV show Fauji.[20] In January 2010, it was reported that Subash Ghai would be launching Shroff in the remake of his father's 1983 film Hero,[21] though Shroff eventually rejected the offer.[22] In May 2011, it was reported that Aamir Khan was also keen on signing Shroff,[23] however, the news was eventually termed as false.[24][25] In June 2012, Shroff was finally signed on by Sajid Nadiadwala to make his debut in Heropanti.[26][27]
Heropanti released on 23 May 2014 and proved to be a box office success, despite mixed reviews from critics.[28][29] For his debut performance, Shroff garnered mainly mixed to positive reviews, with critics predominately praising his dancing skills and ability to perform stunts.[30][31] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama appreciated his performance, saying "[Tiger] registers an impact in several sequences" and that he "scores brownie points in action and stunts". Adarsh also added that "for a first-timer, he exudes supreme confidence",[32] whereas Subhash K. Jha praised him for his versatility, saying "he emotes, he dances and yes, he can fight".[33] However, Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times disagreed, calling his "dialogues forced" and said "his expressions do nothing in a given situation". In spite of terming his performance "a little unconvincing", Kaushal called his action sequences "admirable" and said he's a "great dancer".[34] Furthermore, Anupama Chopra, though identified his star-like qualities and "very solid screen presence", called his dialogue delivery "off".[35] As of September 2015[update] Shroff has two big projects in hand. One is Baaghi: A Rebel For Love, yet again with Sajid Nadiadwala and Sabbir Khan, and the other is a superhero film, Balaji's A Flying Jatt directed by Remo D'Souza.
